Normally I don’t rent low-budget indie films I usually go for the better known American ones. In fact the only reason I rented ‘Late Night Shopping’ was the brilliant four star review it received in Total Film hailing it as a marvellous British slacker pic to rival some of the current blockbusters. Being a fan of slacker stuff such as Seinfeld, Friends, Coupling and the films of Kevin Smith I decided to give it a go and I’m very glad I did. "Late Night Shopping" is the award-winning feature debut from writer Jack Lothan and director Saul Metzstein. From a couple of articles Ive read they seem to be drawing comparisons with the team of John Hodge and Danny Boyle (not forgetting producer Andrew MacDonald) the people behind "Shallow Grave", "Trainspotting" and...ahem...."A Life Less Ordinary". In short, this movie is about a group of 20-somethings who work the night shift. When not working at their various jobs, they meet to chat at a local diner. Vinnie is a womaniser, Lenny can’t talk to any girl he’s interested in, Sean isn’t sure whether or not he and his girlfriend are still together, and Kate basically doesn’t have a life. All of the characters were likeable, and the cast did the best they could with the material, but they were hindered by bad writing and generally poor direction.
