Late Night Shopping (DVD) ... released 07 June, 2004 at Cinema Club / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Made on a shoestring budget but with huge dedication and imagination, Late Night Shopping is the kind of independent cinema that Britain has excelled at in recent years. Based upon the lives of four young people who frequent after hours Glasgow, this is far removed from the nihilistic Trainspotting school of film making, instead offering a warm, uplifting view of urban life. On the face of it, the characters simply meet up during their dead-end, night shift jobs, to ease the boredom. Gradually, however, a bond develops that goes deeper than any of them might have suspected. Given that most of the film takes place at night, the mood is intimate and sparse, before the characters make a literal and metaphorical journey into the light. The interplay between the four (Lance, Ashfield, Clienti and Von Wolfson) is superb and it is their relationship that carries Late Night Shopping to its heart-warming conclusion. Along the way there is some lovely humour, as well as moments of real drama. Quirky enough without ever heading down some cultist cul-de-sac, this is a must for fans of well-crafted bold cinema. On the DVD: Late Night Shopping's disc has some real thought gone into it. There is an excellent documentary feature on the making of the movie, although the interview and on location segments do seem to simply repeat the material in less engaging form. Best of all is the commentary from director Saul Metzstein and writer Jack Lothan, who take us on a tour of the perils of making a film for comparatively little money. Their dialogue is both witty and informative and cannot disguise the pride they have in their finished product, as well they might. --Phil Udell

Like the best slacker pics it’s a film ‘about nothing’. The only major thing to happen is Vincent sleeping with Sean’s girlfriend Madeline (Heike Makatsch) and it’s from this point that the film forces the foursome to face up to themselves and their various situations. Premium Review Late Night Shopping (DVD): Dark and Rich (623 words)

Normally I don’t rent low-budget indie films I usually go for the better known American ones. In fact the only reason I rented ‘Late Night Shopping’ was the brilliant four star review it received in Total Film hailing it as a marvellous British slacker pic to rival some of the current blockbusters. Being a fan of slacker stuff such as Seinfeld, Friends, Coupling and the films of Kevin Smith I decided to give it a go and I’m very glad I did. First of all I didn’t expect to sympathise so much with the subject matter: the dullness of night work. I’m a night worker myself so the themes of futility and want of a better job are ...  Read the complete review

"Late Night Shopping" is the award-winning feature debut from writer Jack Lothan and director Saul Metzstein. From a couple of articles Ive read they seem to be drawing comparisons with the team of John Hodge and Danny Boyle (not forgetting producer Andrew MacDonald) the people behind "Shallow Grave", "Trainspotting" and...ahem...."A Life Less Ordinary". Unfortunately on the basis of this movie this comparison seems excessively optimistic. The movie deals with four acquantancies (dont call them friends; this is an issue debated in the movie) who all work nights in different mind-numbing jobs and who meet up in an ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Late Night Shopping (DVD): Not worth your money. (211 words)

In short, this movie is about a group of 20-somethings who work the night shift. When not working at their various jobs, they meet to chat at a local diner. Vinnie is a womaniser, Lenny can’t talk to any girl he’s interested in, Sean isn’t sure whether or not he and his girlfriend are still together, and Kate basically doesn’t have a life. All of the characters were likeable, and the cast did the best they could with the material, but they were hindered by bad writing and generally poor direction. Most of the scenes appeared rehearsed, and the dialogue was unnatural. A lot of the time I felt like I was watching actors rather than the ...  Read the complete review
