Lawrence of Arabia (1962) *film only review We begin at the end. T.E. Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident in Dorset, on 19th May 1935. He was 46 years old. The almost mundane circumstances of his death were a huge contrast to the extraordinary life he had led. The making of Lawrence of Arabia was a long and arduous journey, as were Lawrence’s own experiences. It took a year and a half to shoot, and with so many remarkable and epic scenes it is understandable why. Some of the more memorable anecdotes come from Peter O’Toole, who played Lawrence. He remarked how the filming of a scene in which he talks with actor Jack Hawkins whilst descending a ... Read the complete review

Director David Lean had something of a penchant for making epic movies, and the worst offender in terms of length was the incredible three-and-a-half hour 'Lawrence of Arabia'. The film is unquestionably one of the most memorable movies of all time, with Maurice Jarre's haunting musical theme and the film's sumptuous cinematography lending a beauty and mystery to sand dunes long before Anthony Minghella had Fiennes and Scott Thomas rutting about in the desert. THE PLOT The film is loosely based on the real life Lawrence of Arabia, T. E. Lawrence, using his book 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. Lawrence, played by Peter O'Toole, ... Read the complete review

Lawrence of Arabia was made by David Lean in 1962. For almost forty years it has undergone numerous cuts and edits, been distributed in several different formats and dubbed into many languages. The latest format is this new double-disc DVD set. I won’t go into detail about the film suffice to say that it is an all-time classic, a winner of 7 Academy Awards and nominated for 3 more. Apart from a massive cinema screen, widescreen DVD is by far the best format to see it in. It tells the story of T.E> Lawrence’s fight to help the Arabs form their own nation and independence but the story goes much deeper than that. The events that take place show ... The film 'Lawrence of Arabia' is currently available to buy in a 2 DVD box set in Regions 1, 2 and 4 (that's North America, Europe and Australasia respectively). There are only superficial differences between the different releases – the Region 1 release is in NTSC format, where Regions 2 and 4 are in PAL. The result is that the Region 1 release has a longer running time (228 minutes rather than 218), due to the decreased number of frames per second, and that the Region 1 release has fewer lines of information making up the picture. For this latter reason, the Region 2 and 4 discs are fractionally superior. Since the Region 4 disc was released ... Read the complete review
