Layer Cake (DVD)

I went to stay with my mum and dad recently, and on our return, I pinched a huge pile of DVD's from their house and put them in order of watchability. Layer Cake came right at the top as I missed on the tele last month, and I was annoyed, so we decided to watch it last night, and I am glad that we decided to watch this one! This is a great DVD, I was never a fan of Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. But this was a cut above the rest. Daniel Craig plays the lead role very well as a drug dealer who is clever enough to know when to get out. The story has some awesome twists and turns to leave you speechless, a fantastic film, which will have you glued to the television right to the very end. I had not previously heard of this 2004 film until I recently picked up and watched the DVD. The film, Layer Cake, is a modern crime thriller set mainly in London and is based upon a novel of the same name. Apparently, the author also wrote the screenplay for the film. The main character, who remains anonymous throughout the film, is played excellently by Daniel Craig, the current James Bond. XXXX (as he is described in the credits) is a big-time drug dealer who has tried to rise above common criminal behaviour and hopes to retire as soon as he has amassed a personal fortune. Having made a name for himself as Guy Ritchie’s mate and producer of Lock Stock and Snatch, Matthew Vaughn has finally set out on his own. His directorial debut came in the form of last years Layer Cake. The film itself boasted a whole host of British acting talent but instantly doubt was raised as to whether Vaughn could make anything to compete with Ritchie’s debut movie.
