Layer Cake follows the story of the unnamed protaganist played by Daniel Craig (although the character is listed in the credits as XXXX, so that could be his name?). He narrates the film and is a cocaine distributor without the gangster image and behaviour, with good connections all around London. XXXX's boss, Jimmy Price ( Kenneth Cranham), then sends him to track down Charlie, the daughter of price's associate called Eddie Temple (Michael Gambon). At the same time, Price tells XXXX to buy and distribute a whole lot of ecstasy tablets (1 million i think), which have been stolen from a Serbian Gang and which XXXX is unawares of. Matthew Vaughan (producer of Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch) makes his directorial debut with British gangster flick Layer Cake, an adaptation of J.J. Connolly's novel. Daniel Craig stars as "XXXX", who proclaims himself as a "businessman" rather than a gangster (he hates guns and prefers to keep a low profile). His original plan is to retire from the cocaine business for good, but before he can do that he must first search for his boss's runaway junkie daughter and attempt to settle a massive drug deal gone badly wrong. In the film, a member of the British drug trade finds himself in some trouble. He sells drugs to the street traders after he gets them from the underworld. He is looking forward to getting out of the business and has used his smarts to get to his current position. However, he must first carry out some orders and this sees him saving a girl, but will he get to her before the enemy does? The cast has a solid preformance and fit into their role very well. They make you feel like you are there. The script is entertaining and funny in places. The story is easy to understand so everyone will be able to enjoy the film. The plot twists will keep you hooked. ... Read the complete review

It takes more than one person to make a movie. This fact does not stop directors and actors claiming all the plaudits for themselves when a film is a success. Hollywood realises this when honouring the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards each year. Which member of the cast and crew go up to collect the award; director, actor, grip, best boy? Nope, the producer/producers of the film. The producers are often the unsung heroes of the film making process keeping everyone in line, the budget on target and the crew in harmony. They are the first to get fired when things start to go wrong, but not the first to get praised when they go right. Sometimes the producer ... Read the complete review
