Le dīner de cons (meaning The Idiots Dinner, but usually translated as The Dinner Game) is a very funny French comedy film released in 1998. I went to see this film when it first came out in 1998, in a small cinema that showed foreign-language films with English subtitles. The only reason for choosing it was that my friend's French penpal was visiting & we wanted to take him to see a French film! I'm very pleased that we chose this film as it's one of the funniest films I've ever seen. "Le diner de cons" or "The idiot dinner" is a film that whilst funny also shows the cruelty in human nature. Thierry Lhermitte stars as Pierre Brochant, a publisher, who spends every Wednesday evening at a dinner with a difference. Brochant and his friends each find an "idiot" to bring with them to entertain the others. The idiot must not know why they are there and are encouraged to make fools of themselves. Unfortunately for Brochant on this particular wednesday everything backfires... Altogether, the story is rather simple. Pierre Brochant, a book publisher takes part every Wednesday evenings in " a dinner of idiots ", rather immoral “game " which he invented with his friends. The principle is to come to the dinner accompanied by an idiot! However, this Wednesday, Brochant hasn’t found yet anyone. But when he meets Franēois Pignon, accountant within the Finances department and fond of miniature replications of monuments made out with matchsticks, Pierre is subjugated by the character and truly believes he found the “Father of all idiots”.
