How do you even begin to describe The League of Gentlemen to someone who has never seen it? I suppose the closest you can get is that it's an alternative sketch show, linked by fact that all the characters live in the same village. It's a parody of the absurdities and parochialism of small town life, with narrow-minded, bigoted, self-obsessed and downright grotesque characters around every corner. Welcome to the village of Royston Vasey, whose inhabitants include a transsexual taxi driver, a toad obsessed couple, a sadistic unemployment officer and two shop keepers who fear anyone who isn't "local" (i.e. from the village). It's this wide diversity of ... Read the complete review

For anyone unfamiliar with the purpose or events of the series, the League of Gentlemen is essentially a sketch show with a number of recurring characters, mostly played by the same three people; Steve Pemberton, Mark Gattis and Reece Shearsmith. The series' main purpose is to entertain through accessible gags, excellent and relatable characters and 'black' comedy; a term used to describe anything alternative which people could possibly find offensive or nauseating. Below is my opinion but I have tried not to give too much of the plot away as the shock value is what really makes the show work. The League Of Gentlemen The League Of Gentlemen consist of 4 members they are Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, although you will only see Mark, Steve and Reece in the show, as Jeremy is a tad camera shy he is basically a writer for the show Please not to all the ... Let me start by saying the League Of Gentleman dvd isn't a boxset, it's just one dvd that features the first series. The League of Gentleman can best be describes as Deliverance meets Emmerdale. It's one of the most bizarre and surreal comedies you'll ever come across. Set in the remote village of Royston Vasey you follow the antics of some the weird, troubled and strange folk that live in the village. The local shop is sat on a hill overlooking the village and is run by an in-bred couple Edward and Tubbs with the motto "this is a local shop-for local people-we'll have no trouble here!" They don't like outsiders and ... Read the complete review

Welcome to Royston Vasey. You'll Never Leave. This comedy started life on Radio back in 1998 under the title On The Town with the League of Gentlemen. Only one year, and an award, later it had transferred to the small screen, where it one several more awards. So, here it is on video, one of the most original, entertaining and disturbing comedy series created. Written by four men; Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and all of the major characters are played by the latter three of these talented writers/actors. I'll run you through some of the characters you are likely to come across in this first ... Read the complete review
