Legend (DVD) ... Mia Sara ... / DVD released 04 March, 2002 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. --Tom Keogh

... fantastic and look like something straight from a dream (or sometimes nightmare). The way they created the whole atmosphere of the sets is brilliant. It's actually no longer found in modern films either. The old-fashioned camerawork and unglamourised non-multi million dollar look isn't found in movies like this anymore, and it just works perfectly with the whole feel of the film. These days, everything looks too polished to achieve the same magical fairy land seen here. Not that I'm complaining, I love modern movies...more

I don’t know about you but there is a part of me that, when I’m watching Lord of the Rings, wants Middle Earth to be real and the good guys to be like Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom and the bad guys to be easily identifiable because they’re so damn ugly. When I watched The Last Unicorn, I wanted unicorns to be real. What if Lara Croft really existed? Life would be so much more interesting if Batman was real, preferably in his George Clooney incarnation! Of all of that lot, though, I would prefer Lord of the Rings to be real, and if it were I would be straight down the estate agents to check out real estate prices near Rivendell (although I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A better film than BLADE RUNNER (286 words)
by - written on 28/11/00 (Very useful, 64 readings)
Rating:

LEGEND is the movie Ridley Scott directed after making BLADE RUNNER and this is a much better movie in my opinion. It stars Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness who wants to rule the world, but who is unable to have absolute power while unicorns still roam the earth. This demon also decides that he wants to marry the Princess Lily, who is loved by Jack, played by Tom Cruise. As you can no doubt tell from the storyline information above, LEGEND is a movie fairy tale and is a good one at that. There are numerous different versions of the film, with differences including added scenes, changes in character motivations and also differences in musical score – one ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Legend (DVD): A Beautiful Modern Fairytale (240 words)
by - written on 11/01/01 (Useful, 45 readings)
Rating:

The first thing to be said about this film is that it is stunningly beautiful. The magical woodland is a mixture of real and fantasy element and the underground home of the villain is harsh, red-toned and contrastingly unnatural. The story is populated largely by fantasy characters. Tom Cruise plays Jack, a Puck-like woodland being and friend to Princess Lily, the other major character. However, the woodland is also populated by other mythical creatures including two very beautiful unicorns. Jack takes Lily into the woodland to see the unicorns but the impetuous Lily decides to pet one of them, giving the villains of the piece a chance to kill it ...  Read the complete review
