Advantages: Great for all tastes, Good introduction to Luc Besson
Disadvantages: You'll wear out your copy
Leon is one of Luc Besson's best films. I became a fan of his films after watching this and have gone on to buy many of his others from Nikita and The Big Blue to The Fifth Element. It's probably the easiest to watch and to get started on your collection with. The whole feel of the film is superb, you cannot help but like all the main characters, even Gary Oldman as the perfectly overacted bad cop Stansfield. Jean Reno is somewhat of a trademark of Besson's films and is perfect as the 'Cleaner' with a heart. The film spends enough time on both Leon's job and his relationship with Mathilda as to keep everyone interested and not change the theme of the film. It's beacause of this I think that the film works so well. It is worth trying to get hold of the Region 1 version as you will get to see more than twenty minutes of footage edited out of the Region 2 version. This was done mainly I believe because of the age of Mathilda and the violence involving her and her relationship with Leon. Watch this and then watch more of Luc Besson's films. ----------- For those interested in a little more detailed description of the storyline. Mathilda is an orphaned young girl whose family were murdered by the dirty cop Stansfield and his crew. Leon the friendly neighbour and hitman takes in Mathilda saving her life and therefore becoming responsible for her. She seeks to avenge the death of her family by learning Leon's trade in order to kill Stansfield.
