 ... hostile townsfolk are creepy, starting out as old men who don't like hippies, but gradually becoming something genuinely uncanny. But that really isn't enough for me. One big problem is that I didn't find any of the characters likeable on any level. I'm fairly sure the hippie menfolk were meant to be faintly repellent (they get nicely proprietorial about 'their' women). But I didn't find myself liking Jessica either. A review of just the film. This is a low-budget, understated horror movie from 1971. It's acquired a reputation as an underrated classic, a subtly chilling little film deserving of a wider audience. I can't agree with that at all. A woman called Jessica has just been released from a sanatorium. Along with her hippie husband and their hippie friend Woody, she goes to live in a remote farmhouse. They find a girl called Emily already living there, and decide to let her stay out of the hippie goodness of their hearts.
