I have been a lifelong Morse fan and cried copiously when he died. I cried even more at Lewis' reaction and how he paid his respects. I thought that this was the end of an excellent series. I was very supprised and aprehensive when I heard that they would be making the Lewis series. I felt at first it was just cashing in, but decided that you can only criticise or comment if you view it first. So I watched this series. I absolutely loved the series. I always liked Lewis anyway and felt that he always had to pay second fiddle to Morse, even when he had to correct some of Morse's mistakes. First things first, I am an absolutely evangelical and devoted Morse fan. You just cant beat him, and what is Lewis without Morse? Surely it's strawberries without the cream, a sundae without the cherry, or perhaps more aptly, a crossword without the answers. Nevertheless as a die-hard Morsian, anything with a vague connection to the great man is going to get me salivating, thus it was with mixed feelings that I first watched "Lewis". Of course it doesn't live up to its predecessor, but that was really a given but somewhat surprisingly its actually pretty darn good. In 1987, the beloved super-sleuth Inspector Morse came onto our screens. John Thaw played the Oxford-educated, introspective and melancholy enigma, whilst Kevin Whately played his slightly naive but upbeat northerner sidekick Sergeant Lewis. In 2000, after 33 fantastic 2 hour episodes where Morse and Lewis deciphered the most complex and intelligently thought out crimes, Morse had a fatal heart attack after having solved a case with which he had personal involvement.
