Released in March 1997 this near hour and a half comedy follows the life of a career minded divorced lawyer who seems to be neglecting his duties as a father.
** BRIEF PLOT **
Fletcher Reede, (played by Jim Carrey) is a lawyer who is divorced from his wife Audrey, (played by Maura Tierney), and has minimal access to see his son Max, (played by Justin Cooper)..., only he seems to be too busy with his career and is constantly breaking his promises to young Max, hurting the little guys feeling and annoying Audrey every time.
The last straw for Audrey and Max comes when Fletcher fails to turn up for Max's birthday party and whilst Max is blowing out the candles of his cake he makes a wish out of pure anger... only this wish is soon to come true... much to Fletchers surprise and shock.
With Fletcher working on a very important case he soon begins to realises that his life is about to take a very dramatic turn, all because of a wish made by a very upset little boy... leading to many strange events surrounding the bewildered Lawyer and his inability to tell a lie...
** IN CONCLUSION **
It is your classic Jim Carrey comedy... (with Carrey being a little like Marmite.. You either love him or hate him...)... with the simple storyline being your basic " divorced couple can't get on and the children tend to suffer "...
Carrey does his usual hyped up characteristics to bring life to what should really be a boring lawyer type part... and he does a great job with it, giving the movie the comical factor it needs, considering the rather plain plot.
There are many comical scenarios involving Carrey as he is unable to do the one thing that has made him so successful as a lawyer... his ability to tell some big fat lies... causing some brilliant, although sometimes over the top reactions from the fiery actor.
The all round acting from all in the movie is actually quite good, although Justin Cooper as Max does come across as a little 'crappy' in parts, but he is young and does have time to improve.
But the arguments between the characters played by Carrey and Tierney are second to none, realism at it's best, (almost like someone has put a camera in my house and is videoing my life with the misses LOL)...
Although some of the scenes may seem a little over the top, if you are a fan of Carrey movies then you will be expecting this as it is his style... a sort of Mr Bean with a couple of brain cells...
The entire movie is great fun, but can be a little slow in parts, and sometimes repetitive with some of the same old gags... but it is a very entertaining hour and a half of daft fun for all the family.
Even the youngsters in the family may enjoy the slapstick nature of this movie as there are no real upsetting scenes or terrible language for delicate little ears...
* Would I recommend this...?
Yes I would.
Even if you're not a big Carrey fan, (remembering his over the top behaviour in some of his previous movies like Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura or even the Mask), it is a worth while movie to watch at least once, with some fine comedy included...
