“Lilja 4-Ever” is the harrowing tale of a teenage girl living in poverty somewhere in Russia. Make no mistakes, it’s a harsh, painful and uncompromising film that has considerable flaws, but is still one that everybody should see. We open with a flash-forward scene. A bloody and beaten girl is running down a street, trying to get away from someone or something. She is dirty and clearly terrified. How did it come to be like this? This is not a film for sensitive minds. Lilya-4-ever, directed by Lukas Moodysson (Togehter, Show me love), takes a really different turn than his previous movies. Volodja, a younger boy, soon becomes her only friend. He is in love with her, ... Read the complete review

Lilja 4-Ever is the story of a girl living somewhere in the former USSR, the Lilja of the title, and how she came to become a prostitute in Sweden. It is written and directed by Lukas Moodysson, who was widely praised for his previous film, Together. And as you may expect from the subject matter, it's not a fun film. Sixteen year old Lilja's life seems to be taking a turn for the better when her mother promises to take her with her to the U.S.A when she goes with her American boyfriend. However her happiness is short-lived as she's forced to stay behind, put into the care of her mother's sister, a grim and unpleasant woman who rapidly forces ... Read the complete review
