Live and Let Die (DVD) ... DVD released 03 November, 2003 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately re-established Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting super-villains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.comOn the DVD: Anyone old enough to remember the old milk marketing board commercials will relish the sight of James Bond exhorting everyone to "drink a pinta milka day" in one of the TV spots included here. Elsewhere in the special features, the characteristically in-depth "making of" featurette has a mixture of both contemporary and new interviews plus behind-the-scenes footage (the alligator-jumping sequence is positively hair-raising). The first of two audio commentaries is hosted by John Quark of the Ian Fleming Foundation and features a variety of cast and crew members, notably director Guy Hamilton; the second has writer Tom Mankiewicz on his own, who in between pauses has the occasional interesting thing to say. Overall another good package of features to accompany another excellent anamorphic print. --Mark Walker

Crowned Review Live and Let Die (DVD): Moore Not Less (1390 words)

In 1972 the producers of the James Bond series needed a new 007 actor again. Sean Connery had finally departed after returning for 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and everyone was well aware that George Lazenby, the first non-Connery Bond, had been rejected in 1969. Stepping into Connery's shoes seemed like an impossible job. The Lazenby gamble had not paid off and Eon were not inclined to cast another young unknown actor. The studio (MGM) suggested a Hollywood star could fill the Connery void and starting bringing up names like Clint Eastwood and Steve Mcqueen. Cubby Broccoli, the producer of the franchise, was agahst at this prospect and promptly rejected Burt ...  Read the complete review

The eighth Bond film sees the third actor to play 007 in as many films. After Sean Connery couldn't be convinced to return to the role again, the producers were searching for a new actor to play the British MI6 agent. Julian Glover was amongst many actors to be considered for the role but "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman came back to an actor that they had viewed before and after his success in the TV series "The Saint", Roger Moore was announced as the "New James Bond" for the upcoming Live And Let Die. Guy Hamilton follows up from Diamonds Are Forever with another Bond film predominately shot in and around the USA. Bond is ...  Read the complete review

Well the Bond series of films are legendary. They all have the gadgets, the style, the car and the car chases, the women and the action. With Dr No being released in 1963, this franchise must be one of the longest going in cinema history and the excitement of 'who will be the next Bond' is a regular occurence. Thus Roger Moore entering the Bond arena in Live and Let Die, this 1973 film, took over from the legend and, to some, the only real Bond, Sean Connery. Even though Connery's last official Bond film 'Diamonds are Forever' saw him bloated and wigged in a not very well scripted or crafted action piece, Moore still needed to add something to stop the franchise slipping ...  Read the complete review

The Bond franchise was in a bad state by this stage, Live and Let Die was announced as the next Bond and again another actor was going to play the title role. In fact this was the third actor to play Bond in just as many films. The actor chosen to play 007 was Roger Moore, he was everything that Bond was supposed to be, and the strangest thing is that he was actually older than Connery who refused to play Bond because at 42 he thought he was too old! The characters in the film are taken straight out of the novel by Ian Fleming, the locations run somewhat parallel to the book, and the plot is somewhat different and goes off on a tangent in really any ...  Read the complete review
