If tackled with a cynical mind, this is only going to give you a big headache. It curiously stars Samuel L Jackson in some sure role of desperation that bridges him between his 1991 Goodfellas role and when he finally struck it big with Pulp Fiction. Emilio Estevez slums it as usual in the 1990s, but there are some pretty big laughs throughout - it's just a shame they're sandwiched with some tr...more

Premium Review Loaded Weapon 1 (DVD): John McClane Is Back !!! (1158 words)

Rating:

Way back in 1978, a movie called "Animal House" was released, which starred a young John Belushi. The fact that it had a prefix - "National Lampoon's" - made it the first in a whole series of movies from the American comedy institution. After nearly 30 years of producing movies, there have been a varying degree of hits and misses. With successful titles such as the excellent "Vacation" series, to virtually unheard of films like "Disco Beaver From Outer Space" (I've got to track this one down !!), the National Lampoon tag is a blessing to some, and a curse to many ! In 1993, the latest National Lampoon movie to hit ...  Read the complete review

Ok, so you think me mad,, I still laugh to belly aching extremes every time I watch this film!!!!! This is primarily a piss take of the Lethal Weapon series! It stars Emilio Esteves who plays Colt (spoof Riggs) and Samuel L Jackson as Luga ( spoof Mertargh)who are investigating the case of smuggling cocaine into childrens cookies sold by the Wilderness Girls!! Esteves plays the burnt out on the edge cop, who has just lost his close partner and love , his golden labrador. Jackson plays the old , by the rules , coming up to retirement , family man cop. Also the arch enemy is played by none other than Captain James T Kirk, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Loaded Weapon 1 (DVD): A Great Film (218 words)

The person who wrote the other review on this film must have been crazy. I first taped it off TV many years ago and thought it was great but I lost my video and was deeply dissapointed because I thought it was great but I couldn't remeber it very well. So when I heard it was on TV I jumped at the chance to watch it and to tape it again. So that is what I did I have since wathced it numerous amounts of times and still laugh at it. I personally feel that this film is one that you have to watch over and over before you can get all the funny bits because you can always see something funny going even if it's only in the background. I would ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Lethal Wit 1 (399 words)

I picked this up for £5 on DVD recently, and it's an absolute bargain. The film is a comedy spoof, and is a perfect addition to the National Lampoon series. James L. Brooks once explained that he was always trying to put jokes in where people wouldn't even think to put them in, hence the Simpons on The Tracey Ullman Show. Loaded Weapon 1 is a perfect example of cramming as many gags into one film as possible. True, the plot is pretty non-existant, but it doesn't need one. You don't watch this film to get heavily involved in plotlines. The gags are thick and fast - I find myself rewinding sequences to see them all. It's the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Loaded Weapon 1 (DVD): Silly but fun (233 words)

Loaded Weapon may be a very low rent spoof, but I'll be damned if I didn't laugh - this is a dumb, fun ride, and makes no apologies for it. The spoof is generally quite an acquired taste, and this is incredibly reminiscent of the Naked Gun films. Coming from Gene Quintano, who wrote several of the Police Academy sequels, it's not really any surprise. That said, it really is lowest common denominator humour, and I find that it's best approached either when innebriated, or when in a particularly good mood. If tackled with a cynical mind, this is only going to give you a big headache. It curiously stars Samuel L Jackson in some sure role of desperation that ...  Read the complete review
