Advantages: Very funny
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little dated
Have you ever wondered what a baby actually hears when we talk, and what it is that it's trying to say to us when all that comes out is that 'Goo goo, gaa gaa!' nonsense? Well, you need look no further than this film, as director Amy Heckerling takes us on a fun 80s comedy featuring new born baby Mikey. The bonus is that we, as the viewers of the film, get to hear what Mikey is thinking and trying to say all the time, with hilarious consequences.
When Mollie has a fling with Albert, she falls pregnant and gives birth to Mikey, an adorable little baby boy. However, Albert doesn't seem to want to know and, not keen on giving up her life quite just yet, Mollie sets about going on dates to find the perfect man for her and Mikey. They randomly meet James, a taxi driver, and for a while it seems possible he could be the guy, but then Albert is not completely out of the picture yet.....
This is a very clever film, as we get to hear the voice of Mikey as he thinks and tries to communicate things as a baby to this strange new world he's suddenly become a part of. It's the whole 'If only babies could talk' thing, and we as the viewers can hear what Mikey wants to say. Without this, the film would probably disappear into the realms of yet another average romantic drama with elements of comedy, but with it, it's a near stroke of genius.
The acting from John Travolta as James and Kirstie Alley as Mollie is very good, but it is Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey who steals the shows and gets all the laughs. I laughed my head off at parts of this film, and since becoming a parent, I have watched it again from a completely different viewpoint and still laughed, perhaps even more.
The film is well shot, and the cast and crew all do a good job. There is nothing special about the remaining elements, and its greatness is probably that it doesn't try to do too much. I highly recommend this film, it'll give you a laugh and entertain for an hour and a half or so. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.97, and the film spawned two sequels, sadly lacking the appeal and quality of this film, and they are both available from amazon.co.uk as well.
Summary: Very funny situation comedy film with good performances all round
