Advantages: Perfectly set, cast, and directed

Disadvantages: Some may find it too long

I was never all that aware of the Lord Of The Rings novels even existing back when i was at school, was always more of a Harry Potter geek i can shamefully admit. Though, when i watched The Fellowship, i was so thoroughly impressed, and many other people felt exactly the same. I mean, beautiful scenery, creating a pretty realistic fantast world, all my favourite fantasy creatures with un fake looking make up, and a ridiculously good cast. I also loved that unlike Harry Potter (which i still love to be fair) this was not a movie made for kids, and me being a teenager at the time, that was a godsend!

Plot-
Sauron threatens to destroy the kingdoms of middle earth, and take them as his own. The only thing in his way is the one ring, the source of his power, which lies in the hands of Bilbo Baggins. When the wizard Gandalf (Ian Mckellen) realises that the only thing to stop Sauron is to destroy the ring, he knows that he must enlist the help of young Frodo (Elijah Wood)
On their travels, hobbits, men, an elf, and a dwarf, come together to help them on their quest.

This is in no doubt an epic movie! Set in New Zealand, the feel of Tolkein's world is incredibly realistic. From quaint farmland, to eerie forests, to snow peaked mountains, there is at no point the idea that this was filmed here on earth, it really is THAT realistic! I mean, i'm not saying i thpught it was filmed on another planet....im not that delirious....

So!
The different creatures in the film are all very realistic, from orc's to dwarfes to elfs, the makeup department really does an impressive job here. You never find yourself failing to take the creatures seriously due to this (such as in doctor who or the like)

The acting her is top notch, with Ian Mckellen particularly good as the wise wizard, and Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan personal favourites as Pippin and Merry, the two cheary immature hobbits. Liv Tyler also entrances you as Arwen, the beautiful mystical elf. I personally found Orlando Bloom irritating as Legolas the poncy elf, but maybe i just have a vendetta against that 'man'.

Peter Jackson excells here in directing an exciting fantasy, which although an epic 178 minutes long never loses its interest and charm. I stayed entranced throughout.

Conclusion-
This is most deffinately a film that remains with you afterwards, and i cannot concieve how it could have been done any better. This is a fantasy masterpiece, and i would recommend it to any fan of film out there. Some children may find some scenes a little scary, so parents can decide whether or not it is appropriate. But with no sex or swearing, it's not what anyone would call distastefull.

Summary: A must see for any film fan
