Advantages: Outstanding cast, epic storyline, attention to detail is staggering, fantastic special effects
Disadvantages: Possibly too long for some (we're talking at least 3 hours), not for those who don't like fantasy
I remember when I first went to the cinema to watch this and thinking 'please don't make a royal mess of this classic book.'
I didn't need to worry. As soon as the credits stopped rolling and the action began you just know you're watching something very special. The word epic screams at you from the first great battle and we're treated to a fair sized prologue setting out the basic storyline of the ring.
The ring (for those who don't know) is pretty much the nuclear weapon for the denizens of middle earth. Whoever wields it is undefeatable yet this ring has a will of its own to get back to Sauron (the owner). If this should happen then it's a dark age for the inhabitants of middle earth.
So, who's the best answer to this potential catastrophe? Three foot high Hobbits! Of course they don't do it all by themselves, they get help from the fellowship comprising of An elf, a wizard, two men, a dwarf and four hobbits.
I won't go into great detail on how it all pans out, you really must watch the film for that (otherwise this review will go on for about 4000 words!)
However, I will say that quality poors out of every inch of Middle Earth. Peter Jackson's attention to detail is quite staggering, probably even obsessive. It's evident he truly loves this story and even the swords are crafted with runic writing. Just watch the extras to see what was involved in creating this epic.
The more exotic creatures of this encounter are the ringwraiths, a cavetroll and a rather nasty demon called a balrog.
This is no ordinary fairy tale either. There are twists in store for Gandalf (Sir Ian Mckellan) and Boromir (Sean Bean) and the wonderful orchaestral score is spot on for both of their ultimate trials.
To sum up then. A great story and a damn site cheaper now than the price I paid when it came out. I've seen this in boot fairs for a quid for goodness sake, so if you want to lose yourself for a few hours then this is ideal.
Summary: Enjoy :D
