Advantages: Its amazing

Disadvantages: a little on the long side

I'm not going to waste too much time with the plot here. If you don't know it already you've been hiding under a rock for far too long. And if I tried to give any more than the briefest overview of it I'd still be typing days later. This is the 1st installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it stays pretty faithful to the book although of course has very much less depth than the books else it would last a lot longer than the already substantial ~3 hours it stands at without the bonus/extended features.
A magic ring forged by an ancient evil and containing much of the evil's power has been found and the evil is returning. Its up to a small group of adventures to save the world by preventing this forces of evil from getting the ring and becoming unstoppable. Of course its not quite as simple as that - the adventures include several hobbits - child sized humanoids more comfortable with a pipe, slippers and a second breakfast than in chain mail battling orcs.

Those that have read the books will no doubt be unhappy with some of the bits that have been missed out, (personally I miss some of the early stage bits with Tom Bombadil and the trees, and the barrows) but its the nature of any project this size that some things have to be overlooked.

Plot, cast, sound and effects are all excellent. This is a film you really should watch even if you're not normally interested in the fantasy genre.

Summary: Band of adventures set out to save the world from evil by destroying the One Ring.
