Advantages: beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: very long
I would say this is a film mostly for boys, but I totally loved it myself. Andrew was a huge fan of the book and dragged me along to the cinema to watch this. I didn't think I would like it at all but the scenery and special effects are so amazing, I couldn't help but be impressed.
The story is based on the book by JRR Tolkien. It follows Frodo, a Hobbit from the Shire who embarks on an adventure like no other to destroy a powerful ring. If the ring falls into the hands of Sauron, the bad guy, the world will end. Frodo is joined along the way by different races such as a dwarf, an elf, humans and more hobbits. They journey through mines and over snowy mountains on their way to Mount Doom.
The story is actually really interesting. Yes, it's a fantasy film but there's enough realism in it to keep it almost normal. The world of Middle Earth is basically Earth a long time ago, so it's not the setting that is fantastical, but the characters that inhabit it. The film was shot in New Zealand, and the scenery is stunning.
The special effects make the already amazing scenery go to a whole new level. Sets such as the mines of Moria are mind-blowing, and you can't help but be impressed.
The actors are brilliant. Considering a lot of them were fairly unknown, it's a tribute to the casting skill of the crew who put together some brilliant actors.
Some of the scenes are quite scary, especially the Orcs, so I wouldn't recommend showing it to pre-teens, but those over that age should be fine.
At over three hours, it's a very long film, but it never gets dull with the mix of adventure and excitement.
If you liked it, you can watch the other two films in the series: 'Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'.
Summary: you really should watch it
