Advantages: Great sound, Brilliant technical effects, See it loud!
Disadvantages: Ugly, Grotesque, Ugly, Grotesque, Hard to comprehend, Too long, Boring & unjustifiably hyped.
If this is the first chapter of an epic trilogy, please count me out of the followers! I didn't know this kiddie was over three hours long! With all the media hype to this feature, I half expected a very watchable movie, but disappointingly, this turned out not to be the case. If you can comprehend any of the dialogue and what it means and maybe even suss out what the ring piece actually does (good or bad), then you probably won't lose the plot on this one like I did! That said there are some pretty haunting devilish undertones to the Omen style soundtrack and some very good sound effects too- see it loud for sure. If you do manage to see it loud, don't be surprised if you fall asleep during the film though. I literally did! This is the first movie that I have ever seen that has induced the onset of sheer boredom, so much so, that I actually closed my eyes and gave up completely, only opening them again when I got any perception of some more special effects on the horizon. Everything else about it is dire. The scope of Tolkien's masterpiece may have eluded filmmakers for decades, but director Peter Jackson has brought us the tale of Frodo (whatever kind of sick name is that)? Pug ugly that?s what, just like Gandalf as well (urggh)! Just listening to these names, let alone watching the boss-eyed and grotesque, almost sickening,(but not necessarily horrific) characters makes you cringe. The only thing worth watching here is some of the interesting state of the art special effects, - even if most of them are hardly enchanting or beautiful in nature. There are no soothing or visually stimulating pleasant style images at all. Unless you like the really ugly creatures, Michael Jackson 'Thriller' style zombies, and, almost a replication of the characters from the new 'Planet of the Apes!' The 'Mummy Returns' style scenes are interspersed with the 'boss eyed' cl
ose ups of our leading lord laddie and shots of dwarfed beings next to lofty bearded Wizards with attempted philosophical, almost Latin banter and conversation that is not very comprehendible. It?s very nearly striking on a hardcore biblical mythology format. This is yet another piece of dangerous trash that has been grossly commercially hyped, that then, (post records) really turns out to be fairly disappointing. Those unfamiliar with Tolkien's world (as I am), may quickly find themselves lost in it, to the point of forty winks. The depth of his creation can be grasped in a much shorter guise, and it certainly isn?t here; the struggle of good against evil explodes on the screen, now and again, but it goes on and on, and on in-between the sheer unadulterated boredom. The movie ended with an exhausted audience either dozing in their seats, not knowing quite what to make of it, feeling somewhat disillusioned perhaps. We were exhausted, and surely no one wants to wait for more? For everyone else: don't you dare miss it. (DO)!!! You have been warned.

- 21/12/01 I disagree with your review, but it was very honest. Although there were changes from the book it was mainly for the better and added more weight to the characters and improved upon the ending in some ways. For a film to stay faithful to the book while at the same time trying to please those who would never attempt to read the book and would rather just see the film I think Jackson did a superb job at balancing this. If people find this film boring it is because they have no heart - you become so involved in the characters - the main one being Middle Earth itself. I loved Star Wars, but to me Lucas has lost the plot ? The Empire Strikes Back made the Star Wars movies, without that episode the saga would be average (and this episode had no conclusion) if he had just started with the first episode it would have been poor. I think Lucas needs to learn a great deal from the sheer talent of Jackson. You only have to look at the genius of his first work on Bad Taste (He filmed it on a $250 camera, did the effects himself, edited, directed, starred as several characters ? you name it) to see this man's versatility and what he can get out of a small budget - given the finest actors, special effects (though subtle most the time and not in your face like SW episode 1) this man is a god. |

- 20/12/01 I completely agree with you (as my fresh new review shows). At least I know that my own views are not in isolation and this review gives me more credibility in what I say. |
