One of the best films in a long time. Has everything going for it - the characters, the special effects, the humour, scenery and what's more a cracking good yarn! Can’t think of better way to spend a few hours – and contrary to some ops it’s not too long. The complex story would not lend itself to anything shorter. I think anyone who has read the book would confirm this. Few of the events in the book are easily omitted. Each has something to add to the enjoyment of the story.

The casting was so good I could not believe how closely the actors resembled the images in my head. Perhaps this is a tribute to the author’s talent in conjuring up images without long boring descriptive passages. Also, the filming takes advantage of the way our brain naturally interprets perspective to manipulate the images on film. Gandalf appears to be much taller than the hobbits on film whereas in reality the differences are not so great. It takes some working out to see how it was all managed.

Other ops give more detail about the cast etc but the best thing to do is just go and see it yourself. Worth both the time and the money involved and best viewed on the big screen.
