... positively shines!! Yuri Orlov (as played by Nicholas Cage in his absolute element)stumbles across an ill-fated choice of career path when he witnesses two men being gunned down in an abortive assassination attempt on a local crime-boss. His rationale is that just as people open restaurants because people always need to eat, so it is true that in a neighbourhood like his, as crime-ridden as it is, people are always going to have the need of small arms!! So, with his brother, he begins establishing contacts and doing what he ...more

Premium Review Lord Of War (DVD): Super Film (261 words)

Rating:

Plot Nicholas Cage plays Uri Orlov, an internation arms dealer who spends his time trading arms with mostly third world countries. He is constantly on the run from the law, but is very clever in his ways and gets himself out of trouble every time. He takes his brother with him as well, and they have become a great money-making team. It is a black comedy, that is set in all different places around the world making it intriguing and exciting at the same time. Actors Nicholas Cage plays the starring roll off Uri Orlov, and performs exceeding well as always. Jared Leto plays Uri's brother, Vitaly Orlov. He is less well known but still deserves as much ...

Lord of War allows Nicholas Cage to ply his trademark tough, quirky persona to the max. He has no intention of spending his life working in his parents restaurant with his brother and he realises that selling guns is something there is always a need for in the, alleged, stronghold of the Russian Mafia. Yuri starts off small, with the assistance of his brother, selling guns to local gangsters but with the fall of the USSR and the independence of ...

There are a number of people who seem to hate Nic Cage and likewise there are a lot of people who think he’s an incredibly talented actor. Personally I fall into the latter category and although I know at least half the people reading this will disagree with me, he is an actor I enjoy watching. Lord Of War was released last year and although I never actually made it to the cinema to see it I did buy the DVD on the day of its release. The idea sounded pretty good and with a true story providing the basis of the film it had the potential to be Cage’s best work for a while. He plays Yuri Orlov a small time gun runner in his local New York neighbourhood whose ...
