Advantages: pace
Disadvantages: none
Oh I love Lost, and I can't believe I have to wait all the way to January for the next series; I will have to console myself with the older ones.
Lost season 3 was criticised for its slow pace, and even the writers admitted they were having trouble keeping it going. With that backdrop, the pressure was on to make season 4 phenomenal, and they did an amazing job.
It's not really a spoiler to tell you that there are some new techniques used in this series, the best of which is flashforwards. That's right, we get to see into the future!
If you remember, series 3 saw a mysterious freighter come to the island, supposedly there to rescue everyone. Well, this season is split between life on the freighter and life on the island. With that comes a whole heap of new characters, plus a refreshing new set for the show, and it breaths a breath of fresh air into the whole thing.
It is now supposedly 90 days since the plane crashed on the mysterious island, and of the 40 inhabitants not a whole lot are left. Of course, main favs Locke, Sawyer, Jack and Kate are still going strong, and it's a mark of strong casting that these characters are brilliantly portrayed. In fact, considering most of the cast are relatively unknown, they do an excellent job of keeping it authentic when the plot is anything but.
The pacing issues of old are gone, with no more flashbacks (they got so dull didn't they?) and the flashforwards giving tantalising glimpses as to what is to come.
All in all, this is probably the best season yet, and finally ditches those boring flashbacks. It's a great show because it's so unpredictable, and it leads the way nicely to season 5, which is even better!
Summary: do it
