He meets Jennifer Aniston's character Eloise in the hotel he is holding his workshops in - she's a flower arranger and owns her own florists and is a bit of a breath of fresh air for Burke who it seems only has one friend - his agent. You would think there's be lots of funny bits and pieces going on, lots of romantic exchanges between Eloise and Burke but no. They do go on a date but there is no real romance in this at all, except towards the end of the film. The film fo...more

Premium Review Love Happens (DVD): Good performance, utterly depressing and slow film (639 words)
by - written on 09/11/09 (Very useful, 36 readings)
Rating:

So I'm a fan of Jennifer Aniston and I also like Aaron Eckharts work so I thought this looked like a good film to see. From the trailers it looked like a happy go lucky romantic comedy - right up my street. This film is not happy go lucky at all! And it's more of a drama than a romantic comedy. I thought the film was OK but not what I was expecting at all. All the romantic bits (there is one kiss in the whole film by the way) are in the trailer as are all the funny bits. The funny bits are by no means laugh out loud either. The story is centred about Aaron Eckharts character Burke Ryan. His wife passed away in a car accident 3 years ago and since then he has ...  Read the complete review

DVD - LOVE HAPPENS -- -- 109 minutes worth forgetting Director: Brandon Camp Certificate: 12 -- -- Based in Seattle where the heavens open up as frequently as the Americans tucking into Blueberry muffins first thing. The drown look certainly adds to the morose mood for Love Happens. One of Brandon Camp's first attempts at Directorship, and it wasn't a comfortable experience; certain oddities and brown nosing was over used, a lack of true character clarity was rife and the short casting of Martin Sheen was mercenary, as the parrot loving Father-in-Law. Not a Rom-Com for a reason for it was evidently too emotionally fortified, that had ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Love Happens (DVD): Slushy misfire of a romantic "dramedy" (910 words)
by - written on 26/10/09 (Very useful, 3 readings)
Rating:

note: appears on my film review website, www.thefilmblogger.com, thanks! It's no secret that trailers lie; they piece together the best parts of a film to make it seem so much better than it actually is, but sadly, the trailer for Love Happens, which roused more laughter than sympathy in this critic, did not lie. The film is every bit as cornball and schmaltzy as its promotional material implied if, of course, you distended it out to 109 minutes of intermittent torture. Burke Ryan (Aaron Eckhart) is a self-help author and therapist who has become a poster-boy for helping others cope with their loss. However, he has yet to fully confront his own ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Insipid romantic drama (518 words)
by - written on 24/10/09 (Very useful, 52 readings)
Rating:

Three years after the sudden death of his wife, Dr Burke Ryan (Aaron Eckhart) has published a book about how to deal with grief and is leading a busy and successful life running A-Okay workshops for bereaved people. There's a lot of shouting out of 'I'm Okay! How about you?" "A-Okay!" At a seminar in Seattle he meets hotel flower arranger Eloise Chandler (Jennifer Aniston) and finds himself unexpectedly attracted to her. It's clear she's the first woman he's shown an interest in since losing his wife, but he isn't prepared for the brush-off she gives him. He realizes he is badly out of practice at dating and isn't prepared to give up. Over ...  Read the complete review
