Advantages: Great story, excellent cast and acting, great music
Disadvantages: None from me or hubby
This is one of Hubby's favourite films and I think it is more so as he loves the theme tune, yes last night I had to listen to the theme tune several times before watching the film!
The film is about Johnny who is working in a dead end job as a courier, he hopes that he can one day become like his cousin Jude who is working for his uncle in the family business. The family business being crime centred. Johnny talks to Jude and manages to convince him to let him meet Ray, the Uncle and Gang leader and ask him to let him into the firm. Ray agrees to let Johnny in but under the watchful eye of Jude.
Johnny sets straight to work and steels drugs from the South London gang which sees a war breaking out between North and South London. Just how much trouble will Johnny cause and will Ray be able to plan his wedding to Sadie whilst all this is going on?
Hubby mentioned this film to me ages ago but it never really appealed to me. I have seen it before now but I could not remember the ins and outs of it so we watched it again last night. I have to say it was much better than I had expected it to be, maybe due to the fact that it has a wonderful cast. We are treated to such actors as Ray Winstone who plays the gang leader, Jude Law, Johnny Lee Miller and Denise Van Outen amongst others. I have not named their charact4rds as they all play characters with the same first names as their own.
The role of Johnny was great and I liked how he was narrating the film for us dressed as a clown, I will not say why he was dressed like this as it will give the ending away but it did add to the story for me and left me guessing why he was like this. He worked very well with Jude Law and they had a great on screen chemistry. My favourite character in the film was definitely Cathy as she bought a lot of humour to the film with the side story of her husband not being able to get an erection ever since she walked in on him masturbating! There is one scene in particular which will appeal to all men where Denise Van Outen is trying to show Cathy's husband how to make sex more fun and she is showing him what can be done with a cucumber. Hubby found this scene very interesting!
The storyline in the film was good and I found it quite believable. I honestly don't know how gangs work in real life but I found that this film looked very authentic and it was not too far fetched and I believed that all of this could actually happen in real life. There were a few side stories which other characters which did add some depth to the film. The film was set in London and was actually filmed there so it all looked very authentic and real. I think that a lot of time and effort was put into making it look as authentic and good as possible.
Despite this film being about gangs and gangsters it is surprisingly funny and at times I was laughing out loud. I think the way they managed to mix the hard hitting gang action with the humour was excellent and it did make for some wonderful funny viewing.
The music in the film was very good and I did enjoy nearly all of the tracks. The tracks were quite varied as we do have several scenes of the gang singing on the karaoke and I enjoyed the variety of them. I have to say that I really am fed up with listening to Avenues and Alleyways by Tony Christie now as hubby plays in so much, it is a great song and the theme for the film but I have just heard it too much now.
The DVD which we have does not have any bonus material but this is no great loss to me as I am not really a fan of it. The running time of the film is 1 hour and 34 minutes which I found to be a great length as it kept me interest from start to finish where as if they would have tried to make it longer I think I would have started to have got bored. The certificate on this film is 18 and I do agree with this as there is lots of strong bad language and loads of sex references.
I am definitely going to recommend this film as it is both funny and has a great story and is packed full of excellent British actors.
Summary: North and South London go to war!
