Jean Berlot, a young man subject to a nightmare of being forced into a straitjacket by two orderlies, is befriended by a marquis. At the marquis's estate, Jean witnesses a black Mass, buries someone alive, and is invited to try preventive therapy. He's willing to enter a sanatorium because he believes he can rescue a young woman from there who has told him that the real director and staff of the clinic are locked in the basement. The dream is broken by a slap to the face, a slap from a man only known as the Marquis due to his penchant for dressing like an 18th Century lord. He befriends Jean and offers him a lift from the inn that he is in... and so begins a strange adventure into the fine line that separates madness and sanity as The Marquis takes Jean with him to his home.

Those of you who have heard of the film Taxidermia may think that that film couldn't be matched for outright weirdness and total madness, at the time I would have agreed with that. Lunacy though has matched the sheer craziness of Taxidermia and beaten it on the surreal images it brings to film. Lunacy is the latest film by Czech film maker and animator Jan Svenkmajer who introduces the film in the opening scenes as a mix between the writings of Poe and De Sade. He also calls it a true horror film, something that is hard to deny after seeing it. Svenkmajer is a film maker who specialise in stop motion animation, best known for his take on Alice in Wonderland ...
