Premium Review M*A*S*H - Season 1 (3 DVDs): And So It Begins...MASH For All Seasons (561 words)

I am not really the best reviewer of DVDs so please cut me some slack if i appear to be rambling. But anyway, MASH is a television show about the Korean war and focuses on a MASH unit (Mobile Army Surgical Headquarters), the 4077th. Admittedly this doesn't seem the best place to set a comedy series, but this turns out to be a barrel of laughs with some well written sly wit and one liners that really make the show what it is. For me the best of the series occurred earlier on, when the main characters were still intact, but although the later ones focuses more on the drama elements of the series, but they are still good. M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical hospital) was a television series that ran for eleven seasons between 1973 and 1983. The series was set in the Korean War and based around the oddball characters that served in the 4077th MASH. The series itself fits into the category of black comedy set in the Korean War. For this reason the series is careful to not make too much too much of a joke about sensitive issues and so does make statements about certain things but in a way that places just the right amount of emphasis on it without making the entire show too serious. It is probably the best place here to mention that this series does not insinuate ever that ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review M*A*S*H - Season 1 (3 DVDs): PA Announcement: Laughter is good medicine (1104 words)

Rating:

War is not funny. It is many things, but war itself is not funny. But in the most horrible of places and times that people in war find themselves in, there are the moments of great irony. It is these moments that MASH brings so poignantly to our screens, and which highlight the frailties and humanity of those people caught up in war, as well as the futility, horror, and outright stubbornness they often encounter. This programme first aired in the US in 1972, following a smash hit film by Robert Altman of the same name. America was still suffering from Vietnam, and many critics said this would not allow the show to succeed. But succeed it did, and it became a TV legend of ...  Read the complete review
