Premium Review Macross Plus (DVD): Beautiful Anime (699 words)
by - written on 04/07/02 (Very useful, 149 readings)
Rating:

Theres not been many times you can say that an anime film/program is beautiful. Well, all anime is detailed, well animated and fluid, but this can often be over shadowed by all the sex, blood and violence, like Genocyber and Urotsukidoji (the latter having a very good plot and story, but the explicit sex and gory violence put alot of people off). Macross Plus is another kettle of anime, it is beautiful. The locales being the best, from the bleak deserts and grassy hills of the country, to the rocky cliffs and cityscapes. Each is detailed down to a very fine line, with the Macross building on Earth being very impressive. The dream world the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Music to my ears. (391 words)

The Macross series originally kicked off in 1982 with a TV series, telling the story of a love triangle between a pilot, his commander and a pop star against the backdrop of a war against a powerful alien foe. After 12 years, a successful feature film, being hacked up for US television, and a disowned sequel, Macross returned to it creators hands. And how. Set on the planet Eden, two ex-friends, Isamu and Guld, now arch-rivals meet by coincidence on a testing base, both test-pilots for the next generation of fighter pilots being developed for the military. By chance, their mutual friend Myung turns up as the producer of Sharon Apple, an entirely ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Macross Plus (DVD): Macross PLUS (214 words)

Macross Plus, a story from the famous Macross continuum of Kawamori, will guarantee to thrill sci-fi and mecha anime enthusiasts alike! The story features two test pilots fighting for the woman they both love. The plot is very well woven, and keeps your attention, and towards the end, puts you on the edge of your seat. However, if one wants the full impact and background of the story, I would recommend viewing the 4-part Original Animation on Video (OAV) series of the same name. The character designs are realistic, believable, and very alluring, while the mecha designs are mind-boggling! The Y-19 and Y-21 Valkyries both perform unbelievable moves and show off much ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review My favourite (179 words)

Rating:

I love Macross Plus, in both its forms. I originally saw the OAV 4-part series before I saw that it was available in the original Japanese. I am glad that I did, the story might be a bit lost if you try to concentrate on both the story and the subtitles the first time round, but once you know the story and the characters, you can relax into it, and even spot some new scenes, which were cut from the OAV. Myung's song is also in Japanese, which is in English in the OAV, which is an extra treat. I am not a huge fan of Mecha, but it is nicely balanced with the songs and romantic side to the plot. Almost a yin-yang balance! I fell in love with Sharon's songs, ...  Read the complete review
