Did I miss something ? (Magnolia (DVD))

Advantages: Passes the time Disadvantages: Didn't add up
The film started by telling the stories of a number of 'real life' strange but true incidents, with the narrator commenting that amazing coincidences do happen. Fair enough I thought, thinking it was meant to make you believe that forthcoming implausible events and coincidences in the film could actually happen. The only problem was that what followed was perfectly plausible, so the introduction was all a bit of a waste of time. There are a number of plots running parallel in the film, each of which links by one of the characters to one or more of the others. The stories are all engaging enough, just as well as the film is about 3 hours long, but you're left wandering exactly what the point of all it was. The individual stories never really come together, which you're looking for after all the guff in the prologue about coincidence. You're left wandering if you missed the point somewhere along the line, either I did or the writer did, as you think back through the film and unsuccessfully try and put it all together. Perhaps if someone else could watch this an explain to me what it was all about ? Summary: |
