DVD released 21 January, 2002 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / This first sequel to Dirty Harry was written by a couple of strong voices, writer-directors Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) and John Milius (Farewell to the King). But that doesn't mean the film is particularly good. After Don Siegel's ferociously dark style in the first movie, Ted Post's blocky, television-ish direction in Magnum Force is a huge letdown. The story doesn't win any prizes, either. Eastwood's San Francisco detective Harry Callahan (apparently having retrieved his badge after throwing it away at the end of Dirty Harry) takes on a vigilante squad within the city's police force. David Soul is pretty convincing as the major spokesman for these right-wing avengers. Eastwood, on the other hand, had already turned Callahan from fascinating outsider in Siegel's film to purveyor of tough-guy shtick in this one. --Tom Keogh

Eastwood is for me not at his best here, as he plays a fairly tame cop throughout, and you find yourself wondering why he is called 'dirty' harry, as he is instead just a little rebellious and mostly just a good cop. The film doesn't get boring throughout though, as the drama and mystery side is frequently put on hold for a good bit of gunfight action and some over the top masculine competitiveness. Now, due to my mum's idiot boyfriend, i watch this thinking that this was the first film in the Dirty Harry series. The first film is of course called Dirty Harry, but i am blonde, so..... Plot- Harry Calahan (Clint Eastwood) is a great cop, but he is growing sick of a legal system that fails to imprison the worst criminals due to beaurocracy. However, someone is now killing off some of the worst people in the city, and when evidence points towards it being someone in the police force, Harry becomes embroiled in the investigation. The first sequel to 'Dirty Harry', with all of the ambiguity stripped away. Fetishising Harry's weapon of choice as the title implies, this is simply an efficient and exceptionally violent exploitation / crime movie, with Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) made hero by comparison with a bunch of vigilante cops led by David Soul. Whereas before, Harry was seen torturing the evil Scorpio and thus allowing his escape, 'Magnum Force' hopes to convince its audience that it is somehow OK for Harry to be brutal because he is fundamentally in the right, whereas the younger cops are in the wrong because they shoot unarmed people and are clearly a biy ...
