A poor result from a great talent Ralph Fiennes in Maid in Mahattan (Maid In Manhattan (DVD))

Advantages: Ralph looks as good as ever

Disadvantages: Too many to note

I love Ralph Fiennes and think he's one of the most talented British actors we've ever seen, but this film was just beneath him. Now don't get me wrong, it's not the worst film ever made and Ralph is not the first ( and won't be the last ) male actor to sign up for an under-par film just so he can get hot 'n' heavy with the beautiful Jennifer Lopez but I was really disappointed that he 'sold out' all the same. Ralph plays deeper characters than the lead in this one, the politician Chris Marshall, who quite frankly has the depth of a puddle ( as depicted in the film, whether the character on paper was ever supposed to more dimensional I have no clue ) and it was probably the least challenging role he's ever undertaken. I wouldn't want to speak for Ralph but I'd be surprised if he admitted otherwise.
So now the "he's better than that" rant is over, I'll tell you about the film, but the bottom line is that if you're a Ralph fan you'll be disappointed but if you're not particularly bothered and just want an easy to watch chick-flick then go ahead and rent a copy !!

The film centres around the maid, in Manhattan ( obviously ) called Marisa ( played by Jennifer Lopez ) who has a son called Ty who is really interested in politics and the politician Christopher Marshall. Marisa as a single Mum is working all hours and doing her best to raise her son and as with all single Mothers would like to meet someone that suits their child just as much as them, so the writing's on the wall for this one !! As a struggling maid, she yearns for some of the life that many of the guests who stay there have and takes liberties one day with trying on a guests beautiful clothes. Needless to say, crossed wires result in Christopher believing that Marisa is a guest at the hotel. They fall for each other yadda yadda but the road to romance is rocky for the maid and the politician who both put their jobs on the line. As you can probably guess they deal with the issues head on and get together in the end.

So, whilst it's a sell-out from Ralph ( sorry Ralph, I love you dearly ) it's easy on the eye, but also easy on the mind too, so if that's your kind of thing you'll probably enjoy it. I'm a huge chick-film film fan, but I found this one rather limp and lacking in any depth of feeling or character.

Summary: An under par film even in the chick-flick category.
