... eventually went into an inevitable decline. But the first season's greatness was incontestable. How the Band Got Together, the first episode, does exactly what it says on the tin. Barrington introduces the village of Worksop in a dodgy but enjoyable rap-style. The villagers are forced to eat mud thanks to the despotic King John, but they dream of a freedom fighter who will come one day to free them. Barrington and Rabies are both arrested by the Sheriff on spurious charges. Before Rabies is arrested, however, there is a biza...more

***Before I watch*** I am starting this review having not watched the DVD. Maid Marian series 1 was released on DVD in March 2006, and had been sitting on my Amazon wishlist ever since - one of those things I'd quite like, but not at the top of my priorities. At Christmas (2007) I ordered a load of stuff from Amazon from my husband to myself (rather than him buying me presents which I don't really want), and this was one of the things I ordered. Maid Marian and her Merry Men was originally shown on BBC1 in 1989, and ended with series 4 in 1994. At the time it started I was 8, and I was hooked from the beginning. I suppose I was at ...  Read the complete review

Maid Marian and her Merry Men was the brainchild of British comedian Tony Robinson. In many respects, the show was a children's version of historical comedy Blackadder. Not only did Tony Robinson play Baldrick in that legendary comedy, but Maid Marian uses the same basic premise of taking modern attitudes and sensibilities and transposing them to a period setting. This basically allowed Robinson to lampoon targets like the Royal Family, uh, the Monarchy and, oh yes, the Royal Family. The set-up is fairly simple. Robin is a complete coward who the Sheriff of Nottingham believes is a fearsome outlaw warrior. After the introductory episode, Robin lives with the ...  Read the complete review

Once upon a time, there was a bold and comely freedom fighter that lived deep in Sherwood Forest with the Merry Men. Shrewd tactics and a good hand with the bow marked this bandit boss as a legend whose tale would be told for ages to come. This renowned leader was known as....Maid Marian. I can tell by thy face that another name was on the tip of thy tongue. Fie! You can not believe every drunken bard you find alongside the road, you know! Worry not, Good Folk. Thanks to M'Lord Tony Robinson and the Merchantmen of BBC, you too can learn the truth of the tale by watching 'Maid Marian and Her Merry Men: How the Band Got Together.' This hard to find BBC ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review One for all ages. (228 words)

As a child i loved watching Maid Marian and her merry men, so when the opportunity to buy this series on dvd came along i jumped at the chance. I did however wonder as i'd not seen it since chilhood whether or not it would have stood the test of time, but now twenty years later and twenty years older i found it just as charming funny and entertaining as i did all those years ago. Maid Marian and her merry men turns the original tail of Robin Hood on it's head, with Marian as our brave hero and robin as coward and a pretty stupid one aswell. Making up the rest of her merry men are Little Ron and what he may lack in height he makes up for with his bravery. Rabies the not ...  Read the complete review
