A great movie with wonderful songs! (Mamma Mia! (DVD))

Advantages: Meryl Streep is such a talented actress and singer!

Disadvantages: Somewhat weak storyline

I watched and loved this movie so much that I simply cannot imagine why I didn't write a review about it earlier! Is the movie any good? No. Personally, I thought the storyline just lacked in humor and realism, and is somewhat feeble at times. The plot didn't flow well and broke at time. But I will still insist that this is among the best movies I have ever watched. Firstly, I was more than impressed with the crew's outstanding performance. I was even more impressed by Meryl Streep! In fact, I watched Mama Mia a little after having watched The Devil Wears Prada and all the while I was thinking: Wow! Could that woman be the evil boss in Devil Wears Prada? In fact, while the acting of the rest of the crew was great, Streep manages to outshine all of them! It can easily be said that she saved a feeble plot and helped into making the movie such an endearing and make you want to pop it into the DVD every single day!


The plot is basically about a single mother who lives on a Greek island with her daughter Sophie. Sophie has never known her father, and a few days before her marriage, she sends an invitation letter to three "potential fathers', three men with whom her mother has had an affair with in the past. Chaos occurs when all three end up on the island!


I absolutely adored the songs in the movie! Of course, it features ABBA's songs, and I have always loved ABBA. But I do have to admit that certain songs sung by Meryl Streep was much better, according to me, than when sung by the original group itself. Meryl Streep's vocals for songs such as "The Winner Takes it All", "Mama Mia!" and "Super Trooper" is just outstanding! I have never, ever heard someone sing like that actress! Pierce Bronsan, however, acted extremely well, but I did not like his singing at all! He just does not seem to have a voice for singing. Yet, it is extremely fulfilling to see James Bond in the romantic scenes!


The scenery in Mama Mia is also very captivating! During songs such as "Our Last Summer", or "Lay all your love on me", I was completely taken in by the clear blue sea and white-washed beach! In addition, I believe that the scenery helped into uplifting a somewhat weak plot, because it added a more romantic dimension to the movie. The shot of a church being depicted high up in the rocks with the fading sunset and sea all around is really, really a marvellous picture!


Overall, despite the feeble story-line, I would definitely recommend the movie to any of you! The songs, the cast, and the scenery all contributed towards making this move totally addictive and charming!
