Advantages: Great first time direction, Cool flick, Funny
Disadvantages: This is NOT the DVD!
Man bites dog is an extraordinary first time directorial debut by three Paris students. It one numerous European awards on its release as it wowed, and shocked most of the film glitteratti… Remy Belveux as equally stunning in his performance as the psychotic arrogant come blase killer who has no particular lean or selection as he kills indiscriminately. It’s handled cleverly by the young directors, who are also the stars with injections of humor at the right time to stop this being too disturbing. It’s also shot in black and white, which for the squeamish is a Godsend. It also gives it a darker side as the carnage continues, making the victims dissolve into the mesmeric performance by the precocious talent With Dr Shipmans victims still stacking up like a Railtrack directors bonus pay you kind of wonder if there are guys out there who could kill at will. The way at which Remy sadistically a pop off his victims really does make you think. Theres also a science to his slaughter as he picks and teaes his victims before dispatching them to the to the other side. Theres also a science to getting rid of the bodies. If you want to get them to sink in a canal you must weigh them down with three times the body weight in masonry. Five times for old people as the bones are porous. For kids and midgets it’s four fold. This is the sort of near the knuckle humor we are dealing with here viewers. The film is centered around a documentary style approach as Remy is followed around by a docusoap style TV crew. Reality TV has never been so brutal since we followed that fat pufta around Heathrow. As the unwitting stars of the low budget murder production tot up, the star ends up helping to finance the show by stealing from the victims. Not only does he know which people are best for business, he knows where the valuables are, just by their lifestyles and age. The dialogue is dazzling and his pe
rformance reminds me very much of Rhys Iffans brilliant running witty and thoughtful commentary in Mike Leigh’s Naked. A lot of the films power is in the subtitles so you will have to be on your best behavior and concentration if you rent this cult classic. As the film nears the can, more and more people get knocked off, including one or two members of the film crew. The career prospects are not good in this business, none more so for opposing ones who have the same idea. Theres a brilliant moment where they run into another crew following another serial killer, wicked humor to the extreme. There are disturbing moments to like with a spot of graphic gang rape and equally graphic mutilations. Its not a film for tut tutters. Children and teens are killed, as are grandmas and important people, but it is very funny at times so you have to take that risky, in the context of this cutting movie. Even the not so popular Muslims these days get three rounds of his trusted 45. But he buries them facing Mecca in concrete pillars to be respectful, wonderful stuff. One lady is even killed by a woodwind instrument up the bottom. Like I said, the power of the movie is in the dialect and lead performance. If you pay attention avidly to the subtitles there are some cracking lines there.”If a whale is having breathing trouble, half of Greenpeace and Jack Cousteu turn up to shove it back in. But the poor tuna are only worthy of a E.U canning subsidy”. If you have a dark sense of humor this will blow your mind, if you’re a prude then steer well clear, as this is hardcore n nonsense film making at its rawness. See it and marvel at how good this is for a debut effort. A French film with out a big conked lover and the violence and cutting of La Haine. It’s nearly ten years old but you can find it lurking in the world section somewhere in your local video shop. Not one for serious film buffs
to let slip buy. Evil stuff, how cool would it be for one day to knock off everyone you hate he he .
