What a classic, sleazy slasher film ! Now this is what I'm talking about, the real deal: a nasty slice of hardcore horror with no pretensions towards being anything else. For fans of the genre, this is a real treat. There's no nonsense here, no fillers, just straight up baddness, murders and maddness. For sure, this one is up there with my aold favourite, 'The New York Ripper'. I wouldn't call the plot original. Joe Spinell plays the titular maniac, who (bless him) misses his mother, who was killed in a car accident. Released in 1980 ‘Manic’ was directed by William Lustig who later went on to direct the ‘Maniac Cop’ series of films. The film has a very simplistic plot and stars Joe Spinell as a deranged killer by the name of Frank Zito. Frank scalps his victims, then display’s their hair on mannequins that he keeps in his room (nice guy). The film follows Frank as he goes out and commits murder after murder. The only exception to Franks monotonous killing sprees are when he befriends a woman by the name of Anna (Caroline Munro). She takes Franks photograph while he’s taking a walk in the park and the two develop a rather clumsy ... Read the complete review

Maniac is a film made when Halloween made the slasher genre cool, Every horror film was a slasher film around this time, this one was made in 1980 and the version I seen was the unrated DVD special edition. I had heard a lot of hype about this film on the alt.horror newsgroup so I decided to view it. It didn't live up to the hype, it is a below par horror film one hundred miles behind Halloween and not even as good as Friday the 13th. Joe Spinell plays Frank, a man whos mother abused him but now shes dead, Died in a car crash, But Joe still misses her. He becomes very nuts and starts murdering women and scalps them then putting the scalps on mannequins ... Read the complete review
