March of the Penguins - Luc Jacquet (DVD) ... DVD released 08 May, 2006 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / March of the Penguins instantly qualifies as a wildlife classic, taking its place among other extraordinary films like Microcosmos and Winged Migration. French filmmaker Luc Jacquet and his devoted crew endured a full year of extreme conditions in Antarctica to capture the life cycle of Emperor penguins on film, and their diligence is evident in every striking frame of this 80-minute documentary. Narrated in soothing tones by Morgan Freeman, the film focuses on a colony of hundreds of Emperors as they return, in a single-file march of 70 miles or more, to their frozen breeding ground, far inland from the oceans where they thrive. At times dramatic, suspenseful, mischievous and just plain funny, the film conveys the intensity of the penguins' breeding cycle, and their treacherous task of protecting eggs and hatchlings in temperatures as low as 128 degrees below zero. There is some brief mating-ritual violence and sad moments of loss, but March of the Penguins remains family-friendly throughout, and kids especially will enjoy the Antarctic blue-ice vistas and the playful, waddling appeal of the penguins, who can be slapstick clumsy or magnificently graceful, depending on the circumstances. A marvel of wildlife cinematography, this unique film offers a front-row seat to these amazing creatures, balancing just enough scientific information with the entertaining visuals. --Jeff Shannon

If the egg drops, the freezing temperatures will kill it. The fathers look after the eggs while the mothers walk miles and miles back to sea in order to eat and build up enough energy to make the long walk back to their partners and their eggs so that they can feed their baby. Premium Review March of the Penguins - Luc Jacquet (DVD): March of the... Yawn (248 words)

I thought that this film would be really cute, incredibly interesting and something that I could talk to all of my freinds about the next day. I was wrong. The film starts off badly with a long introduction about how these penguins made a daring choice to stay whilst their surroundings became covered in ice. The film then spends almost 90 minutes discussing these penguins and the annual trek they do in order to keep the species alive. It seems interesting enough, however it simply goes that they find a mate, mate, lay an egg, then the female leaves to go eat, then the male and then they both meet up again before abandoning their new chicks. A good ...

Premium Review "Good as a TV documentary, Let down as a feature film" (299 words)

March Of The Penguins March Of The Penguins takes the viewer on the journey of the mating rituals of the Emperor penguin - Emperor penguins being one of the most resilient animals to walk the earth. Ever since I heard about this film I wanted to watch it as I love documentaries and the basis for this one seemed rather special, the fact it's narrated by Morgan Freeman was an added bonus. It's only now I've got around to watching it and found it to be a bit of a let down. The idea behind the documentary is amazing, however it seems to humanise a spectacular journey way too much and in doing so wrecks the whole thing. As this was a feature film I was ...

Crowned Review March of the Penguins - Luc Jacquet (DVD): Pooped Penguins (1565 words)

Why did I get up from my armchair, go to the cinema, buy a ticket and watch a documentary on animals what with TV being full of this genre? I must confess that I became a victim of the media hype, when the film was released in Germany, penguins were suddenly everywhere! I read an enthusiastic film review in my daily newspaper, a women’s mag advised me to take a box of Kleenex with me to the cinema as women always get wet eyes when seeing young animals (aha?), on the radio someone claimed that on a scale of cuteness from 0 to 10, penguin chicks scored 11(!). I had to find out if I would react as predicted, if I was normal so-to-speak. March Of The Penguins is a ...
