Advantages: So Sweet
Disadvantages: A Little Long
Anybody who knows me knows that I am obsessed with animals so any film that is to do with animals and it is a winner in my opinion. Now I watched Marley and Me on the plane coming back from America so this a film only review but I may buy the DVD at some point so when I do I will update you with the special features. I thought this film was not what I expected and not as good as I had been told but it was still something special and here is why.
The film is about the relationship between John and Jenny. They meet, fall in love and get married and then they decide to get a house together and in an attempt to stop Jenny thinking about having kids just yet, John gets some advice from his friend Eric to get a puppy instead. This is when Marley comes into the picture and he is the most loveable Lab puppy ever but extremely naughty. The film charts their relationship through trying to control Marley.
I believe the story of this film is perfect. John and Jenny's relationship is lovely anyway and the film charts the highs and the lows which makes it very interesting viewing. Now the addition of an adorable dog makes the film even more beautiful as it really shows how a pet can really change your life and your perspective on life in general.
I think the film follows a very central path throughout and it plays out well. Your eyes are drawn to the screen throughout as there is always something going on and to be honest I think there is only about 5 minutes of the film that is dull.
What I did expect was this film to be a laugh a minute film as it seemed to be marketed as a comedy. I found it to be very funny in places but what I liked was that it had drama and romance and a bit of everything. The main way I would market this film is that it is totally heartwarming and I am not joking when I say you will love Marley to bits. It is a great story that keeps you watching so you cant ask for more.
The characters in this film are good and you only really get to know about John and Jenny but that is fine. Eric the mate plays a small part but a bit insignificant really in my opinion. I think however that the cast has been found perfectly. Jennifer Aniston lets face it does always play the same character but she really got into it here and I actually forgot about the inevitable Rachel character she always seems to play. Owen Wilson as John is perfect as always. I really like him as an actor so he was very good in this.
I was very impressed with the acting in this film and that everything absorbs you so much into the film. Marley is fantastic and I love dogs but he is the cutest. Exactly what you would expect from a Labrador as he is so naughty and it does show what a dog is like to own or actually not even dog but every pet as lets face it you have to have a pet that is a little naughty.
The film is a certificate PG which is perfect as I do not think there is anything that is very bad for anybody. I do think young people could get affected by the film though and some of the content so be careful. It goes on for about 2 hours which I will admit is a little bit too long but it was still ok and we all kept watching till the end.
In conclusion I love this film. It was not at all what I expected as it was a drama not a comedy but it was still fantastic. We had our friends come and tell us that it was the best film for years but I liked it but I didn't think it was the best. What I will say though is that it is a fabulous film that should keep your attention and I do recommend you watching it.
I am going to give Marley & Me 5 stars because I thought it was a great and I really enjoyed watching it and would watch it again.
Thanks for reading.
