Advantages: Great movie!

Disadvantages: May have been missed.

I think "Marnie" is one of the lesser known Hitchcock greats. I watched it as part of my film studies course when we were doing a project on Hitchcock. I had heard of it, but hadn't actually seen it before and I quite liked it.

"Marnie" is apparantley a quite complex film because of the psychology involved within it. But nevermind that I don't understand it all and you don't need too, to merely watch the film!

So the story then. Ok, it begins with Marnie (Tippi Hedren) changing her identity. Well, washing dye out of her hair anyway! She has stolen money from the company she worked for and had to leave her job. She flees so that she doesn't get caught basically. Very clever eh?

Sounding a bit like "Psycho"? No, its quite different! Marnie goes on her merry little way with a nice pile of money. But alas, she needs a job, probably more that she needs to steal more money, but hey! Its her way of life!! She then goes for an interview for Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) ...who unfortunately recognises her. Uh-oh....he knows what she has done and when she tries to steal again, he replaces the money himself then blackmails Marnie into marrying him to keep him quiet! Nice eh?

Marnie is unfortunately a bit less than stable. She has a few problems, bless her and mainly with the colour red!! Whenever she sees it she is terrified, and starts to have a semi-flashback. Hitchcock tried to pull the viewer into Marnie's mind at this point by flashing red on the screen, as Marnie sees it.

Marnie doesn't fully understand why she is so scared of it. It is of course a repressed memeory and it has soemthing to do with her mother. Marnie and her mum don't get on and she is very jealous of a little girl that her mother looks after. We don't find out until the end what had happened to her when she was younger, but it is slightly predicatble. He rmarriage with Mark
helps her to come to terms with what happened, in a strange twist of fate!

I won't say any more than that though!

"Marnie" is definatley worth a look. Just because it isn't as famous as say "The Birds", or "Vertigo", doesn't mean it isn't as good (I prefer it to Vertigo actually!)

All the cast put out really good performances and the directing, well, how can you slate Hitchcock?!
