... mundane fashion. The gap between fantasy and reality is powerfully illustrated and sets up the tone and theme of the film. Martin is sent to Pittsburg, a crumbling hum-drum industrial city, to live with his eccentric old Uncle Cuda, played by Lincoln Maazel looking a bit like Colonel Saunders. To borrow a line that Anne Widdicombe once used about Michael Howard, Cuda believes that there is something of the night about Martin and warns him that he will be keeping a very close watch on his activities. Cuda starts putting ga...more

'Martin' is a cult low-budget 1978 film directed by George A Romero. I first watched this several years ago at some unearthly hour on Channel 4 and it's a film that always stayed with me because I was intrigued by the central premise. In 'Martin' Romero effectively turns the vampire mythology upside down and deconstructs the clichés of the genre. He followed 'Martin' with the classic 'Dawn Of The Dead' and the interesting non-horror project 'Knightriders', so you could probably say that 'Martin' captures Romero at the beginning of his most creative period as a director. Although Romero is best known for his 'Living Dead' cycle of films he has suggested in interviews that ...

While George A. Romero is best known for delivering zombie movies, he frequently steps into new areas, back in 1977 he decided to take the traditional vampire thriller and give it a modern twist, the product of that project was the movie Martin. Martin (John Amplas) is 84 years old, this is slightly deceptive however because Martin looks like a teenager. Martin is ill, he suffers from a disease that we might call vampirism. He cannot help himself, when he sees a pretty woman he just needs to drink her blood. In order to try and control himself Martin heads to Pittsburg to live with his cousin Tada Cuda, himself an old man; but one who has physically aged, due ...

A review of the Arrow Films 2-disk DVD. This is a vampire story from 1977. It was directed by George A Romero, who did more than anyone else to drag the horror film into the modern world. He's best known for his zombie films, and Martin is a much quieter affair; it's one of the most interesting horror films of the 70s. A young man named Martin believes that he's a vampire. He stalks and murders women, molesting them and drinking their blood. He goes to live with an aged relative, Papa Kuda, who *also* believes Martin is a vampire. Martin finds himself in a relationship with a depressed housewife, but the urge to kill is ...
