In 1964 I was 10, a village girl who rarely went to the big town . One day we went to the pictures in the nearby town Huntingdon to see the newly released Mary poppins. Mary Poppins is a Disney film a musical in Technicolor. I was enthralled.
Even as a ten year old I loved small children and would regularly is found looking after smaller village children and thought I wanted to be a nanny in a rich persons house

The story set in 1910 adapted from a book by P L Travers is about a magical Nanny, a chimney sweep. 2 children Jane and Michael who are boisterous full of energy. The children’s parents Mr Banks a banker and the mother who is a suffragette. (If I had been born then I can see myself as a suffragette)

Mr Banks is tooo busy to spend any time with his children they are getting unruly he decides to advertise for a nanny to control his children, the children seeing his letter throw it on the fire the note flies up the chimney and Mary Poppins finds it and decidedes it is time she took the family in hand.Mary arrives on the scene floating through the air over London on her black umbrella. her carpet bag.

Mary is employed and amazes the children, she slides UP the banisters, she tidies their toys in their play room by pointing and clicking her finger’s at them and toys fly all over the room to land in their correct place.

In another scene the children meet Mary’s friend Bert who is chalking a picture on the pavement. They step onto and through the picture into an adventure with Mary, walking with cartoon animals deer, rabbits, and penguins. It’s a magical world.

One day their father decides they are having too much fun and not working so he takes them to his bank in London to see the world of work. It’s a disaster and mr Banks gets fired. An old lady sitting on the steps of St Paul’s is selling seed for the birds to “feed the birds feed the birds tuppe
nce tuppence tuppence a bag” (feeding birds on bread is not good for then their digestive systems are not up to it natural seeds are best) the children if I remember are not allowed to buy the food. The children cause mayhem at the bank and run away from their Dad.

Burt who is a chimney sweep in this scene finds them. (Person modern children will not be familiar with but yes we used to have to sweep our chimney)(Well dad did).

With Burt there is a great scene of them all walking on the rooftops meeting chimney sweeps that pop up from chimneys and the song chim chim chimney is sung and danced to this song won an Oscar.

The songs written by Richard and Robert Sherman are one of the things that make this a memorable film. I think these songs will be remembered for a long time.

Some of the other songs are;

A spoonful of sugar, helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down. This was sung in a scene when the children were taking some medicine.

Supercalifragilistic expialidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious.

Feed the birds,

It’s a jolly holiday with Mary (yes I often got that one sung at me.)

Mary finishes her mission with the family Mr Banks spends more “quality time” with his children and Mary departs to somewhere else maybe to create calm through fun and chaos.
This film is 140 minutes long.

This film yes maybe a little dated but fun it is full of colour and fun. It is bright and lively I think it is suited to children aged 6/7/8.

Julie Andrews is Mary, Dick van Dyke the chimney sweep.
Dick may have a terrible cockney accent but he is charming and endearing the children love him.
Julie Andrews won best actress academy award for her part in this film award.

So yes I would recommend you had a nostalgic trip watching this with your children one wet afternoon. The film
is Available on video or DVD it is the sort of film that maybe shown at Christmas on the TV
