Advantages: Might appeal to some people
Disadvantages: Lots, the acting, the story, the lack of plot
We rent DVDs from Lovefilm who then encourage you to rate the DVDs you have watched so they can suggest other films that you might enjoy. This is how I came to watch Material Girls a film that I new nothing about but thought I would give it a try.
The film is based around the two central characters who are sisters and are played by real-life sisters Haylie and Hilary Duff. The characters are Ava Marchetta (Haylie Duff) and Tanzie Marchetta (Hilary Duff) who are two rich and rather spoilt sisters. They live very comfortably from the fortune left to them by their late father who had created a successful cosmetic company of which they were the faces of. They have a big house, car, staff and everything they want. They don't have much to do with the running of the company as this is all handled by people in the company.
However their dream life comes to an abrupt end when they discover the company is in financial ruin and people have claimed that the cosmetics have disfigured people. Suddenly for the first time in their lives Ava and Tanzie have to stand on their own two feet and find their own way. Can they do it? Can they save their company from ruin and restore their late father's reputation?
As soon as I started watching this film I realised that it was not going to win any prizes for best film of the year. It is a basic storyline and is quite predictable. The characters are very stereotypical Ava is the spoilt money obsessed sister who is very shallow while Tanzie although still spoilt is the brainier of the two and dreams of going to college and getting an education. I don't think I have watched any films with Hilary Duff in and I had no idea she had a sister but having watched Material Girls I don't think I will be rushing out to watch any other films. Their acting was very mediocre, perhaps it is not them, it could just be the script but I just didn't think it was great.
There are some funny moments but it is also quite unbelievable. There are lots of really ridiculous moments where you are left thinking surely you don't expect us to believe that these sisters are quite that stupid.
As I mentioned before the film is quite predictable and of course we couldn't have a film like these without the girls learning some valuable lessons in life and learning that money isn't the most important thing!
I think it's a film that will probably appeal to perhaps teenage girls but its not a film that I enjoyed and I won't be watching it again. I shall be looking a bit closer next time Lovefilm recommend me a film to watch.
The DVD does have a few special features which include the Director's commentary, a making of feature and a music video with Hilary Duff prancing about and singing.
The film is currently on sale in Amazon for £4.68, although this isn't much I still wouldn't recommend spending this on it! The film is rated PG and runs for 95 minutes.
Summary: Two spoilt sisters find out what real-life is like

- 30/03/09 Well, it has Hilary Duff in it (along with sister), so how good could it have really been anyway. ;) |

- 29/03/09 Before I even read your analogy of it I knew what would happen that's how predictable it is....but then I have seen Hilary Duff "acting" before LOL |
