A very large chunk of the movie takes place in the flashback. Jodie Foster stars as Annabelle Bransford, a distrusting female hustler, James Garner as Marshall Zane Cooper, a law enforcer with no tolerance for tomfoolery, and James Coburn as the Commodore, in one of his last great performances. Maverick (DVD): My pappy always use to say........ (640 words)
by - written on 19/11/09 (Very useful, 25 readings)
Rating:

I hadn't watched this for years and then all of a sudden it was on TV a few weeks ago. Having passed it by a number of times, it's one of those films where, once you know what's going on, you feel less inclined to watch it again. However, once you settle back into it, it's a really funny hour and a half that takes the Wild West and gives us a sly comedy. Mel Gibson stars as Maverick, a hustler who is on his way to compete in the biggest card game with a huge prize fund. Along the way, he encounters Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) who plays the innocent but really isn't, and Marshall Zane Cooper (James Garner), another man with whom it seems there is more ...  Read the complete review

Maverick! A film full of twists and turns. Brilliance (508 words)

This film is pure brilliance. I have to say I'm not one for these kind of films. The DVD cover looked like it was going to be a film about the Wild, Wild West or something, which I'm not a great fan of, but due to the fact that I was going through a Mel Gibson film faze, I thought I'd give it a try. The Storyline Directed by the same man that brought us Lethal Weapon, my favourite film with Mel Gibson in (which I have only just found out) this film follows Maverick, a poker player who is raising $25,000 to play in a poker tournament, but the tournament is a few days away and he doesn't have enough money. Maverick then sets on a journey ...  Read the complete review

Maverick (DVD): Cheap and Cheerful (593 words)

'Ante Up - for laughter and action aplenty! Mel Gibson is sly Gambler Bret Maverick, Jodie Foster is a charming scam artist and James Garner (the original Bret Maverick from the Emmy-winning TV series) is a laid back lawman in Maverick, the crowd-pleasing hit that deals you a winning hand' Well, that's how the Region 2 DVD release describes the film. From what I've seen of the reviews in the 'Home > Movies & Television > Movies > Genres > Western' section then most people like this film, some love it. It would appear that those who haven't seen the original award winning series have a higher opinion of the film than those who ...  Read the complete review

Gibson The Gambler! (739 words)

Rating:

I spotted this film on a recent trip to Tesco and vaguely remember seeing it several years ago on the TV so decided to give it another watch as I do quite like Mel Gibson. Hubby was pleased as it is a type of western but I liked the idea of it being a comedy. The start of the film has Maverick sitting on top of his horse with his hands tied behind his back and a noose around his neck. He tells us that he has had the worst week of his life and then we are shown his week. He is trying to get to a massive poker game which is being held with the grand prize of half a million dollars but he is $3000 dollars short on his stake money. He goes to cash in a ...  Read the complete review

Maverick (DVD): Enjoyable, But A Pretty Hit and Miss Piece Of Hollywood Fluf ... (709 words)

Richard Donner's Maverick marks yet another Hollywood remake of an old 50s TV series which then starred James Garner in the title role. A comedy western, it had a likeable charm to it, but was never really anything special, so it was difficult to imagine that a movie based around the show could be anyhting too special. Well as it happens its not a complete disaster, rather formulaic and lasy despite the assembled cast of so called 'big names'. Here, Mel Gibson plays Bret Maverick, a womanising playboy who is down on his luck but with the hope of hitting the big time if he can buy his way into a big poker game being played aboard the Lauren Belle. ...  Read the complete review
