Before going to see Max Payne at the cinema I knew nothing about its background. I went purely because my favourite actress, Mila Kunis (That 70s Show, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), was billed second after Mark Wahlberg. So in order to give this review a bit of context, I've had a look for the original video game that the film is based upon, on Wikipedia, the font of all knowledge. So, according to Wikipedia, Max Payne the video game is a shoot-em-up game which was released in 2001 for Windows, quickly followed by released for Xbox and Playstation 2. In 2003 a sequel was made, and the franchise as a whole has sold over 7 million copies. Bizzarely, having read ... Read the complete review

Film Only ~~~~~~ Expectations can hardly be high of a movie entirely based on a video game. Yet sometimes the makers of such films succeed in delivering something that, if not original, is at least bearable for those who are not die-hard fans of the video game. John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines, Flight of the Phoenix) is, however, not one of those directors. There is nothing appealing about Max Payne, which fails in terms of plot, acting and special effects. The latter are vital in this genre. In this movie they are suprisingly poor. Mark Wahlberg (Shooter, The Italian Job, Boogie Nights) plays the titular brave and unhappy police officer haunted by ... Max Payne is a 20th century fox, action packed thriller. I wanted to see this while it was out in the cinema as the trailer looked really good but I never got the chance. So as soon as it was out on DVD I bought it. **The plot** Three years ago, New York police department detective Max Payne's wife and baby were murdered. Max gets himself transferred to the cold case office where he can continue searching for the killer who got away. He's a loner, but two people reach out to him during a fateful week: Alex, his ex-partner who may have found a clue, and BB, the security chief at the pharmaceutical company where Max's wife worked. Meanwhile, bodies are ... Read the complete review

I cannot honestly remember consciously choosing to add "Max Payne" to my lovefilm list. However, it arrived in our post box, so I'm guessing that my rationalisation was that the film would appeal to both my husband and myself. We both tend to appreciate the action film noire genre to which "Max Payne" belongs and are never looking for anything overly heavy during term time (my husband is a teacher). Neither of us has any familiarity with the game on which the film was based. We tend to enjoy adaptations of graphic novels that fall into this genre, "Sin City" springs to mind. However, I think perhaps the filmmakers underestimated the ... Read the complete review

Assassin for Revenge MAX PAYNE Last night I was feeling tired and crappy so decided to go up early and watch a film in bed. I had two choices of films that were posted to me that morning and decided I would go for Max Payne. I have heard abit about the film based on the computer game, but not a lot about what it is like. So after a shower and into my comfies I put the DVD into my play station and hoped it was not a waste of time. The video game of Max Payne was released in the UK in 2002-2003 and is a third person shooting game built around taking your revenge. The game sold pretty well as it was the first game to have a bullet mode shooting- ... Read the complete review
