Advantages: Doesn't take itself too seriously, funny, lindsay lohan

Disadvantages: A bit simplistic at times, Neil Fynn (janitor in scrubs) isn't in the film enough

Before I give you my review of mean girls, I feel i should give you the background of how I came to watch this film. I had been out one night, got rather drunk and took up a friends offer to crash on his sofa.

I woke up at 4.30 in the morning and tried to set the alarm on my phone only to see that it was out of charge. At this point, realising that I had to get up for work in 4 hours time and fearful ofsleeping in, I decided to sacrifice a few hours of beauty sleep and watch a couple of DVD's.

My friends taste in movies is rather bad, all Van Damme and Segal or B-movie horror flicks. So I was quite suprised to find Mean Girls nestling in his collection (he later assured me the film belonged to his ex girl-friend.) So with absolutely no preconceptions of the film,I turned it on. And to my surprise it's very good.

Lindsay Lohan's character (forgive me I'm terrible with names)is the new girl in a typical all-american high school. She makes friends with a rock-chick girl and her gay friend who fill her in on the in's and outs of the school, telling her about the ruling theocracy - the plastics.

The plastics are 3 girls, who can be labelled as 'the scheming one', 'the stupid one' and 'the 'easy' one.' Lindsay Lohan'scharacters mission isto infiltrate them and divulge their secrets.

What sets mean girls apart from the other teen-movie fodder available by bargain-bucketful is that it doesn't try to hard, less try to be something it's not. Yes, it still ahs the sappy moralistic ending you expect from a hollywood film, but manages to be satirical enough about high-school life for this not to matter.

At times it is savagely funny, in a kooky kind of way. It's a shame it's been billed as a chick-flick as I feel it has enough charm to warrant appeal to both sexes.

Oh, and lindsay lohan is hot!

Summary: funny, easy-going comedy
