Advantages: Light hearted and pleasant entertainment
Disadvantages: Funniest Gags in the trailers
This film had so much potential, with a great cast. De Niro has moved from his hard man roles into a few comedies lately with "Analyse This" and this latest offering. The cast are fantastic and carry out the parts well, but unfortunately all the best gags and lines end up in the trailers that had drawn me to the film. There are a couple of funny scenes and the ending does give you the all important feel good factor, but I would suggest you wait for the video. There were a couple of scenes that they could have made more of, the opening of the wrong suitcase being just one example (don't want to spoil the film any more by telling you too much). You do feel the animosity towards Ben Stiller from the whole family and you are constantly on his side. The twist in the story line does not really add any suspense to the plot and is quite predictable. The film is worth wasting the couple of hours in front of a screen, but don't go to it with too many expectations and you will enjoy it more. But most of all DO NOT watch the trailers, put your fingers in your ears and say ?I can?t hear you? until someone tells you to shut up or you think the trailers are finnished.

- 25/01/01 Good opinion, though I thought the film was funnier for the fact that it never overplayed its hand with the jokes. Though not subtle, it let the jokes build up and was more realistic than, for example, the Farelly Brothers comedies. Good point, in general, about trailers though. I know they have to make you want to watch the film but sometimes the trailer can make you feel like you have just watched the whole film in five minutes, a case in point being 'What lies beneath'. Especially in a comedy, if all the great set pieces have been seen before then you feel cheated. However I did not think this was so evident in meet the parents. All in all a useful op. |

- 25/01/01 I thought this film was really funny although I think I ruined it for my fiance. I had seen the trailers and ended up laughing in advance, especially with the scene at the dinner table. Good Opinion, Well Done |
