Memento (DVD) ... Carrie-Anne Moss ... / DVD released 14 January, 2002 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / An absolute stunner of a movie, Memento combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that "the incident" that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information. Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what's just happened to him. That's where Memento gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out why it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time! , and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together. Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his quest and his wry humour in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players including Carrie-Anne Moss, and the movie is all but stolen by Moss' fellow Matrix co-star Joe Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. Memento has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It's rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com On the DVD: this amazing movie looks crisp and clean in a good anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) picture accompanied by Dolby 5.1 sound. The menu is almost as baffling as the movie itself, but once you master the navigation you'll find interviews, biographies, a tattoo picture gallery and the shooting script among other extras. Most mind-boggling of all, however, is the "Memento Mori" option in the special features menu, which allows you to play a specially re-edited version of the movie in chronological order, beginning with the end credits running backwards! --Mark Walker

... from the protagonist's point of view, and many of the scenes are actually shown in reverse order, giving us some insight into the confusion and frustration Leonard suffers as he tries to unravel the mystery. It is a clever trick as, like him, it robs us of our memory; we never know what has already happened leading up to any particular event. The only clues we have to the nature of the people he meets are the scribbled notes he has left for himself. It is difficult to know who to trust and our perception of events a...more

Premium Review Memento (DVD): I can't remember to forget you (1253 words)
by - written on 17/03/08 (Very useful, 101 readings)
Rating:

Memento is the story of a man with short term memory loss, who can remember his past up until the traumatic event where he and his wife are attacked but is unable to make any new memories. This means he can not remember anything, including what he is doing, for longer than several minutes at a time. The film is the story of this mans mission to avenge a man he knows only as John G who he has limited information about who we know from one of his many tattoos; raped and murdered his wife. It also deals with the way Leonard has to live in order to cope with his condition, which involves a lot of notes, tatoos and photographs to remind himself of things. The main ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A clever and well thought out film (372 words)

Rating:

Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) is a man with an unusual brain defect - he has no short term memory and is unable to remember things for more than a few minutes including people, names, faces and actions. This film follows Leonard as he searches for a man who raped and killed his wife and is the reason for his condition - the infamous John G. The most interesting thing about this film is it's sequence of events as essentially, it's backwards. The opening sequence shows what happens at the end of Leonard's search and goes back from there. At first, I did think that this may be a bit pointless as you essentially know the ending within the first two minutes. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Memento (DVD): Clever (162 words)

A few years ago i started watching this film, however half way through i was interupted and was forced to stop watching. It was in the sale for £5 and i thought i'd give it another go. Im glad i did. This is a clever film. It must have been difficult to film, but it was worth it. This film is about a man with a very odd conditition where he has no short term memory. He knows who he is, and can remember everything up to the point of an incedent (you can find out what when you watch the film). Throughout the film he is trying to find out what happened. Now this is one clever film where everything happens backwards. its a good idea, and makes for fun ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Call me dumb if you like but I don't understand this film at all. Films are to be enjoyed not puzzles to solve, mind you many will disagree with me on this. Memento is a psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby and insurance agent with big problems. Shelby wakes up in a motel room oblivious to the reason why he is there. He suffers from chronic amnesia; solution for this problem is for him to write notes as things happen because in very short time frame he forgets everything. He writes messages on his body and on the photo he takes. A character keeps propping up, a woman is dead ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Memento (DVD): SOME MEMORIES ARE BEST FORGOTTEN (1162 words)
by - written on 28/01/04 (Very useful, 115 readings)
Rating:

Amid a morass of conventional Hollywood blockbusters all clones of each other featuring inane predictable plots, wasteful special effects and below average acting it is refreshing to think that every so often a filmmaker has the balls to come up with something different and make it into a huge commercial success. Memento is one such film. PLOT Essentially this is about revenge Leonard Shelby an insurance investigator is trying to discover who raped and murdered his wife. A hard task in the best of circumstances but Leonard has an extra problem. During the attack he suffered head injuries, which mean that he has lost all his short-term memory. He ...  Read the complete review
