Advantages: Very entertaining., Very funny.

Disadvantages: None.

I hadn’t realised that over 1500 aliens already live on this planet, most of them in the area of Manhattan, New York. This film tells the story of a secret US government agency that monitors the immigration of space aliens and tracks their whereabouts on this planet.

This highly amusing, very entertaining film is brilliantly made and after a few minutes you do start to believe that there very well could be aliens here amongst us already. Will Smith plays the part of a New York cop (James Edwards) that is drafted into the agency where his identity is deleted and he becomes agent “J”. All of the members of the agency wear identical nondescript black suits and sunglasses, and so are known as the men in black. Will Smith is a great actor and so easily seems to portray these bizarre, off-the-wall type characters.

“J” is being trained to replace the older retiring agent “K”, but very quickly he is involved with the hunt for a space galaxy that has been in safe keeping on Earth, but now is in the possession of a space bug. The bug is an intergalactic terrorist that kills two alien ambassadors in New York in order to steal the galaxy, that is kept inside a small pendant. Another space race has positioned a space battle cruiser close to our planet and threatens to destroy the whole planet rather than let the bug escape with the galaxy. (The bug is played by Vincent D’Onofrio, although you will not recognise him).

A crazy story, but it makes a great film that seems to go very quickly. “K” is played by Tommy Lee Jones and he is a very good straight man for Will Smith. “K” has a device for eradicating anybody’s memories of aliens, which is very handy. This “flashy memory thing” is used on Laurel, the city medical examiner (played by Linda Fiorentino) after she has seen some of the aliens. Later on in the film Laurel is taken prisoner by the bug, in case he gets h
ungry on his journey home.

This is a very entertaining film and the make-up and special effects of the aliens is first class. I never realised how many different types of aliens there were, and how well they could all get on together.

This film is very tongue-in-cheek, that is acted out very well and put together in a fast, slick movie that must appeal to anyone that wants to watch a good piece of light entertainment.

I highly recommend this film to everybody.

Was a funny film - especially liked the bit when Will Smith helped to birth the alien baby!
