FBI Agent Art Jeffries has been relegated to lowlier jobs due to an undercover job not really going to plan. While on a boring job, he is instructed to look into the case of a missing boy - Simon Lynch, and find out why his parents seem to have been involved in a murder/suicide. Harold Becker is one of those directors who tends to take an average plot and then stretch it out over a movie’s running length irrespective of how many holes appear in its fabric by doing so. With Mercury Rising he gives us another example of this and whilst it may be watchable it is nothing more than sub-standard Hollywood fare complete with all the usual derivative trappings, ludicrous plot twists and gigantic holes which make it a very bitter pill to swallow. I'm looking in The Mirror newspaper and see Channel 5 are showing a bruce willis film tonight with a four star rating. Surely this can't be the same Mercury Rising that got some very bad reviews on theatrical release ? I thought. Yes it was. This is a film with so may stupid plot points and is just the type of situation that is slightly unbelievable. Now I know films like Armageddon would never really happen but they don't take themselves seriously like this film seems to. The film Mercury Rising is full of action, brilliant story line and excellent casting. The actor who played Simon was really realistic and believable. The film twists and turns all the way to the end. The end of the film is worth the wait; it is so full of emotion between Simon and the character played by Bruce Willis. The story is about an FBI agent who finds himself protecting Simon a 9 year old autistic boy, from another governmental agency. Whist on the run he enlists the help of a friend in the FBI offices, who helps him along the way with cars and information. Simon solves a code for a secret government code that is in a puzzle book. To me this film manages to show that Bruce Willis can work with an actor of any age, which some critics doubted. He plays Art Jeffries, an FBI agent who is in over his head at the bureau after a difference in opinion with his superior over a bank heist. Meanwhile, a small, autistic boy named Simon receives a puzzle book, and while reading it, he discovers a secret government code called "Mercury," meant to keep officers in the American Embassies safe from harm.
