Message In A Bottle (DVD) ... released 18 October, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / If, as they say, you're in a certain mood, Message in a Bottle can be just the ticket. Based on Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel, this handsome but overly calculated romantic tale stars Robin Wright Penn as Theresa, a Chicago Tribune researcher who finds a note encased in a green bottle that has floated onto a Cape Cod shore. The message within is a heartfelt, yearning declaration of love to a woman named Catherine but the author is unknown until Theresa (rather improbably) tracks him down in North Carolina. He's Garret Blake (Kevin Costner), a taciturn builder of sailboats and a grieving widower whose late wife, poetically speaking, was the intended recipient of the seafaring note Theresa found. Theresa, a divorcée with a son, decides to meet Garret, only to find him as bottled-up as his message. Nevertheless, a romance blooms on the strength of quality time in a sailboat and lots of cuddling, though the script tosses in bits of conflict to keep their relationship spicy. Directed by Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman), this love story is entirely by the numbers, with Costner inhabiting (rather than performing) a stock fantasy of a man perfect in every way save his broken heart. Penn brings more vibrancy to her equally predictable part but fortunately for all, Paul Newman, John Savage, Robbie Coltrane and Illeana Douglas are on hand in nicely textured character parts. Sometimes predictability is exactly what one wants when settling in for an evening of home video, and this movie fits the bill nicely. The appealing cinematography is by ace cameraman Caleb Deschanel. --Tom Keogh

It is shamelessly sentimental, but is somehow held together and made bearable by Robin Wright-Penn's superb acting, as well as Paul Newman's charisma. Kevin Costner gives his usual one-expression-in-every-scene performance, which could be worse. The sea acts as a constant, physical barrier between the main characters, symbolising the repressing, insistent pull of the past. The couple are either looking to conquer the waves or are threaten...more

Premium Review Message In A Bottle (DVD): Costner goes soppy (843 words)

Most people have a favorite genre when it comes to watching videos but I’m just as content watching a full blown weepie as a low budget horror so it’s hard to put into any bracket exactly what makes a good film for me. Message in a bottle is undoubtedly one of the aforementioned weepies so much so that even in my pre-hormonal phase I needed an entire lorry load of kleenex to watch it. It stars the somewhat talented but usually over dramatic Kevin Costner (JFK, Dances With Wolves) stars as Garret Blake, a shipbuilding/restoring widower and Robin Wright Penn (Forest Gump) as Theresa a divorced journalist with a soft spot for romance. After ...  Read the complete review

This movie first appealed to me, because as a child I was always fascinated by messages in bottles, I remember hearing on the news about a young boy in England who had found a bottle with a message in it while walking along the shore - it was from another young boy in France. I thought this would be so cool, so everytime I was at the beach, I always scoured the shore for a bottle - the only thing I ever found was empty coke tins! Oh well! I digress? So what's this movie about? Theresa (played by Wright Penn) is a journalist who works for a major American Newspaper. She's constantly on the look out for a new story. Theresa is ...  Read the complete review

A few months ago, while channel hopping I saw that ?Message in A Bottle? was about to start, and while I have never before felt the urge to watch it, tonight was different. I wanted to relax and be entertained, which is a novelty for me nowadays. The film is based on the novel by Nicholas Spark, and has transferred very well to the big screen. The film begins with Theresa played by Robin Wright Penn, who works in the research department of The Chicago Tribune, finding a message in a bottle while out jogging on the beach. The letter is written to someone called Catherine, and it is full of wishes. The writer has many wishes that they did not fulfill ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review MESSAGE TO ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME. (508 words)

I like an intelligent film, one with a story that is feasible, because that's just the way I am. I have watched this 1999 movie about three times now, and each time, I notice things that I didn't notice the first time. Tonight, I noticed the beauty of the scenery which is the backdrop of the story. When Nicholas Sparks wrote the novel upon which the story is based, I wonder if he saw actors as brilliant as those used ever being in his story. It's a well directed story and the Director, Luis Mandoki, who also directed 'Angel Eyes' and 'When a Man Loves a Woman'. The story takes us to a chance happening, a once in a lifetime event where reporter, ...  Read the complete review

Attracted by the trailers my better half and I went to see Message in a Bottle at the cinema. We were not to be disappointed by a truly outstanding film. Kevin Costner, Robin Wright-Penn and Paul Newman are all fantastic in a film where a widower writes a letter to his wife, wraps it in a bottle and throws it out to see. Wright-Penn picks it up off a beach and begins a search for the author. To the cynic it is quite predictable what happens, but the twists and turns of love never run smooth and there are enough interesting sidebars to keep everyone interested. It is a terk-jerker, filled with emotion and often tension amid characters, but I found it a ...  Read the complete review
