Michael Clayton (DVD) ... to his name, and it’s unsurprising that immediately after the release of Michael Clayton, there were many arguing he was deserving of a second. For without a doubt, as impressive as the film is, it’s very much Clooney who powers this one forward. Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who previously adapted the Bourne movies for the big screen, Clooney takes the title role as a lawyer who goes in to do the jobs that, bluntly, nobody else wants to know about. And before long, Clooney discovers a cover-up that proves to be a mighty challenge to uncover, and one the inevitably conflicts him as a result. Aided by a superb supporting cast that includes the likes of Sydney Pollack, Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton at its best is a tense and effective thriller, written and directed steadfastly well by Gilroy. It’s not without a few problems, most notably a comparably weak conclusion and one or two underdeveloped characters. But it’s still a worthwhile film, and very much worth seeking out to simply enjoy a terrific performance from a Hollywood leading man who absolutely refuses to shy away from edgier roles. Long may he continue to do so. --Jon Foster

... it, especially in the first voice-over, it showed you images that I felt meant nothing, but it was appealing to me and made total sense to put them there for a reason I'm still not quite sure. Oscar-winner George Clooney proved that he isn't just another pretty face and does really well, but was almost outshined by his co-stars Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton. Tom Wilkinson's performance as Arthur Edens a lawyer who had a major breakdown was both memorizing and memorable, it left me breathless. Tilda Swinton's some...more

Premium Review Michael Clayton (DVD): Not as clever as it thinks it is (1125 words)

Dirty Sexy Money 'Michael Clayton' is this year's big award night, token medium budget movie with a conscious... "The Intelligent Thriller", the one that garners momentum because it has enjoyed sharp lobbying with all the right backing and casting to get it noticed, but a very average movie under the glitzy wrapping paper. The Academy wants something that looks and feels thoughtful and challenging in the mix to show their liberal side and Michael Clayton ticks all the right boxes. In truth the viewers are victim to an old Hollywood trick here where the director and cast make the audience think they are cleverer than they are because they have ...

(Review is reproduced from ShaunMunro.co.uk, cheers!) Director: Tony Gilroy Cast: George Clooney, Sydney Pollack, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson Release Date: September 28th, 2007 (UK), October 5th, 2007 [limited] (US) Certificate: R (US), 15 (UK) NOTE: Michael Clayton was the recipient of one Oscar last night at the Academy Awards; Tilda Swinton won for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role". In recent years, Tony Gilroy has become something of a virtuoso in writing slick, intense, and foremost, smart thrillers. The advertising for his latest outing, "Michael Clayton", tells us "the truth can be ...

Crowned Review Michael Clayton (DVD): 'You don't kill me, you buy me!' (996 words)

I had heard a lot recently and a few months ago at the Oscars about George Clooney's latest film, Michael Clayton, but nothing about the actual plot of the film itself. Someone had mentioned something about Shiva, another about law corruption, and another about plot twists. Great, I thought, so it's going to be like a John Grisham adaptation with a healthy mix of Al Pacino from The Devil's Advocate thrown in, right? Wrong! Read on..... The Plot The film opens with a voiceover from Tom Wilkinson's character Arthur Edens, meeting with Michael following Edens' apparent mental breakdown. Then we see a poker game, from which Clayton leaves to 'fix' a ...
